Sound quality on an erased tape?

I have a few tapes (that I purchased new originally) which really have some useless things I recorded on them a while back, nothing I will ever need. I was wondering if I erased them, I have a tape eraser...and reused them for some mixes-would I be losing much in terms of sound quality vs using...

You've got to be kidding me...

This made me laugh http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Rupert-Neve-Designs-Portico-5042-True-Tape-FX?sku=482649 Why not just buy an actual tape deck???

Do you use noise reduction when mixing down to 1/4" 15ips from tape based tracking?

I guess I'm trying to go for the "vibe" of my favorite records which all had a small bit of hiss..

Do you use noise reduction when mixing down to 1/4" 15ips from tape based tracking?

I track with NR, but when I mix down to my Tascam 22-2, I don't use any NR...I don't mind a little hiss, I actually like it how it sounds-just a bit not too much.

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

Hopefully it will stay working! :) They do good work, a local smaller shop with a pretty good repair department, in Brooklyn. Also had one of my guitar amps in there a while back. I'm in there all the time, so I'm sure if anything happens they would stand by their work. Hopefully I wont need...

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

I took it into a local music store last night and got it back today! Its working like a charm. The guy said he "adjusted the heads, and replaced a few caps" So it very well may have been just that, maybe things weren't perfectly aligned. I don't know, I'm just glad this is over with and I can...

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

I called mouser, they were unable to help, unfortunately. I switched out the cards again, this time I put 6 where 8 was and the problem persists on track 8, "wavey" sounding playback of test recordings, and high frequency is cut a bit. So, doesn't that rule out the relay? Because I switched...

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

I will try deoxit gold, might as well replace the relay or at least have the spare part in case i need to. did a search for "G2E-187P-H" but came up empty...any recommendations for a part that will work in its place?

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

I tired cleaning both connections today again, but it made very little difference. I guess I can try the "gold" product but I also am wondering if some things need to be replaced.

-previously recorded material plays back with no problems though, on the same track...its just a problem as of everything recorded today.

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

arghh!! the problem is back on tack 8-but in a new form now! after using it yesterday (and things were working just fine in record and playback modes), but today all of a sudden everything that i try to record on track 8 will play back a bit faint and "breathy"...the same sound you would get if...

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

I have some experience with soldering, etc... I think I might pick up a "parts deck". Something that has good heads, rubber parts etc. Thanks for all your help and info. The Model 80 has been working since I swapped out the cards, and cleaned the connections!

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

cool, i have some deoxit, i will clean the contact points. if i were tp replace the relays, where would i go about getting parts? is it a good idea to maybe invest in another model 80 for just parts? they are relatively inexpensive-under $200 usually.

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

ok i swapped the cards. it only gets more confusing now... 7 and 8 were swapped (which means 1 and 2 were as well, since they are connected to 2 & 7 , 1 & 8). I recorded some tones from my synthesizer, and it was all recording, both 7 and 8 were recording...but channel 8 was very faint/weak...

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

i will have to try switching cards. never have done anything like that, is it difficult? right now i'm just very frustrated and trying to find a fast fix, i don't want to record anything digitally and my only other tape machine is a tascam 22-2 (2 track). here is the model 80 service manual...

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

yes the heads have always been cleaned and demaged regularly since ive owned it (about a year or so). definitely not a mixer issue either, tried a few different things there... im worried that something needs fixing in the actual recorder...is there anything in specific i should look at? or...

Yikes! Track 8 just died on 8 track!

I don't know much bout fixing or diagnosing problems on tape decks... Unit is a Fostex Model 80 8-tracks on 1/4" tape. I was recording some demos and everything was fine with the recorder, but around day 3 of recording, track 8 simply stopped recording all of a sudden (no warning signs). It...
