    Opinion of VST Compressors

Blockfish is my favorite free VST compressor. Look it up if you haven't. Can have attitude, grit, and pumpyness if you want it; or be clean and smooth.

    Blink 182 Effect...

Isn't Vocalign used sometimes to make a doubled part unrealistically tight like that? Maybe a combination of Autotune + Vocalign... The closest you will get with just CoolEdit is just to double the vocal to the best of your ability, and perhaps to some manual cutting/pasting/stretching of...

    why bother with 24 bit

I thought everyone had already settled on bit depth being = resolution. Or should we now say bit depth + frequency response = resolution ? At any rate, I'm glad a lot of this hogwash is getting cleared up. A lot of people look at their pointy waveform graphics in their program...

    wave files on DAT?

Well, when you transfer them into your DAW through SPDIF or whatever, you will have wav files so to speak. But they are recorded in raw PCM on the tape I believe. And if it is a little microcassette looking R-DAT, it will be 2-track stereo at either 44.1k or 48k. If it is a VHS-looking ADAT...

    why bother with 24 bit

Ha. The square wave sound happens when people clip over 0dbFS; not due to sample rate. And the more samples per second = the faster (higher) frequencies you can capture; not necessarily better resolution of a sound. On the 16 bit thing, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Whatever your...

    Dumb Digital Rant

OK, suppose we all go back to using 2" tape for all recording purposes. We feel fulfilled that we are utilizing the best, warmest, clearest, cleanest, prettiest recording method possible. So at least we have pleased our own ears. But...what about those lowly schmucks who dare to buy a copy of...

    About crossfades and Punch ins

Yeah, but the thing is, crossfading and splicing parts together works better with a drummer that can play a part consistently the same way for the most part every time, except they have a mis-hit or something that needs to be fixed. If you are just playing whatever randomly comes to you and...

    Dumb Digital Rant

There is no analog Autotune. Most essential even for most of today's bigger projects. And yeah, it is more about editting than track count, methinks.

What order for Vocal Plugin FX Chain?

Actually, I've been known to do such a thing... :D Sometimes even already de-essed esses sound icky going through a reverb, so I tame it down separately a little more; using an aux send, of course.

Bonded Logic 'Ultratouch' - Better than OC 703

Yep, I think this would be an excellent application for the stuff. Use some kind of fabric to tack it up there, and you'll be all set. Although if you can get mineral wool significantly cheaper, that would be a good route too. I would expect mineral wool to block a little more sound than the...

    44k,48k, 88k, 96K?

Higher sample rate = higher possible badwidth. You can record higher frequencies with a higher sampling rate, assuming the analog electronics before the convertor will pass them. Sound has to be bandwidth limited before being converted to digital, otherwise alaising will occur and sound bad...

    E-Mu 1212m Problem

Right, "No Sounds" but a seperate regular soundcard selected as the windows default. Maybe I'm just weird that way, but it works best for me.

    E-Mu 1212m Problem

Yeah, I know it is easy to do, but in my experience unnecessary. In fact I have had fewer problems by having a seperate soundcard selected as the default card to use, as apposed to leaving your recording soundcard in the slot for windows sounds.

i want to buy a console..

What about mixing the drums down to stereo and putting some NON-goofy FX on it? ...like compression? BTW, I wouldn't bother buying a console that is very old unless you have some tech skills, or you don't mind paying a tech, or you can get some kind of guarantee on its condition. Unless you...

    The best mic

This is a key difficulty. Picking out THE mic for a given situation that makes the recording person happy. If anything makes you happy, then I guess the mic doesn't matter. And some of us don't have any hope to be better performers, so we have to focus on the other esoteric details that we...

Bonded Logic 'Ultratouch' - Better than OC 703

Yep I made some corner wedges of part cotton, part mineral wool. The cotton was a little tricky to cut--too tough for scissors, to stringy for electric knife--and it does compress quite a bit (I could have used just a little more material than the bales provided after compression), but I think...
