i thought it is best to record around -18dbfs

OK, to me the value thing is working with my brain better than the bits thing. Yes we are talking about 16 bits, but these are just the binary system we use to encode our voltage values, of which we have +/- 32767 in 16 bit. So that said, we are not only moving the bits over, we are spreading...

i thought it is best to record around -18dbfs

"Sticky" indeed... BTW, there seems to be a typo in that roger nichols article. Each step in 16 bit should represent .00030518509476 OK, so this is blowing my mind a little bit. So far, looks like snow lizard is right about everything; except for maybe 0VU = 1V ; I thought 0VU = 1.228V ...

i thought it is best to record around -18dbfs

No prob, flatfinger. OK, I don't think I am having any luck making an intelligent argument, so I guess I will drop this for the moment and perhaps search out some solid facts (not that I don't trust the facts of a snow lizard, but hey, we are all just random dudes on the Interweb). Thanks for...

i thought it is best to record around -18dbfs

Thank you, that was quite useless. You are missing the side-concept that I was trying to seek clarification on. I am fully on board with the 0VU tracking concept. I roll my eyes at YOU, sir.

Help me produce my band's album!!!! YAY!!

Wow, a bonafide prodoosuh is on the case now. Anyway jr, I think you are a very good candidate for getting into the home recording muckity muck. It sounds like you are very into critical listening, which is a big part of it all. But you are kidding yourself if you are doing this...

i thought it is best to record around -18dbfs

I'm sorry sir, I'm just not buying this dynamic resolution thing. Say we are dealing with audio at a set bitrate --16bit. The audio is dynamic but hits up to the full scale (0dbFS) and we want to turn it down 6db. So now we gotta fit 65,536 steps of volume changes into the 32,768 possible...

Im screwed on what program to record with?

Ooooo, he used the f*-word and the s*-word.....I think he's really serious; we better quit. If you don't like threads turning into discussions of the rights and wrongs of software piracy, then don't *bleep*ing bother looking at them. Who are you, the police of piracy policing...

Im screwed on what program to record with?

It's not about your chances of getting arrested or not. Geez... These people with no moral compass crack me up. Our boy here would probably just murder a studio owner and steal his gear if there wasn't a higher risk of getting arrested.

    Aardvark Q10 Problems

Perhaps buy yourself a new stick of RAM (under $20 I think) to try by itself in your computer. If it works, ditch the old RAM and buy yourself another stick. If your CPU is idling at 52 degrees, that seems a bit on the hot side to me. Under full load it probably gets too hot. Maybe a new...

"Mastering" limiters are forcing me to change the way I mix.

Wha...? Does that mean they strum really loud, or does it mean they have access to a lot of speakers and amps?

Making Digital Copies of what I made on my 424

I think homeboy just has a single-channel mic input. Gonna hafta get a cheap USB interface or something. Or hook into a buddy's desktop with a line input.

    Thanks Dragon!

I would like a MS Sound Recorder forum. Thank you.

"Mastering" limiters are forcing me to change the way I mix.

Here's a few stoopid things to try on your master bus: 1. A decent shaping/somewhat surgical EQ. Even though EQing the individual tracks is the best, sometimes you can still end up with a buildup/deficiency in parts of the spectrum on the final mix that are hard to attribute to one instrument...

    Doubling vocals

If you are pretty handy with editting audio, you can do a lot of things to make a double match up better. The usual tricks for my are chopping up the words/phrases, scooting them to match the main track as best as possible, and then time stretching to match up releases or whatever. Sometimes I...

    Using tape for saturation

Groovy! I still don't get why all the secrecy. Is this really something that is keeping you above the competition on this board? In my mind, it shouldn't really be all that hard to make a Dolby encoder/decoder plugin; there just isn't enough interest to make it worth any plug-in...

    My mix with a sub

A lot of nearfield monitors are rolling off in freq response around the same area that a lot of consumer subs are tuned for. Just gotta get used to it. Kind of like, you only want to barely be able to make out any deep bass on your nearfields; if it is really kicking, you know you have too...

    Using tape for saturation

Oh yeah, of course it's top secret... I'm interested in a digital encoder because I actually do make digital (CD-ROM) masters for mass tape duplication, and it would save a lot of time vs real-time encoding. I have my doubts that your supposed decoding methods would be all that...

    Using tape for saturation

I would REALLY be interested in your processing chain for decoding Dolby digitally. Do you have encoding mapped out digitally too?

    Using tape for saturation

Whoa. And now we gotta worry about tape jitter, too?

    cher effect

Yeah, I'm a bit confused now too...Is SOS calling that producer guy a liar? Why would he come up with such an elaborate story about the vocoder processing to hide the fact that he used autotune?
