Am i on the right track with a good vocal preamp?

If you're recording your own vocals, you'll have to try some stuff out. Mics and preamps are both very important, but it's pretty hard for us to suggest the best pairing. It's like guitar amps. There are good ones and bad ones, but there's a large range of good ones, and depending on your style...

Dealing with P and B burst in post

You can also automate a high pass filter, to cut lows only during the plosives. Another approach is to set up a sidechain input to a compressor, copy the vocal track to anotherr audio track and use that as the input to the sidechain. Boost the offending frequencies on the copied track. Now...

    Stereo Or Mono

I have to admit I never use stereo tracks. If I want to record a source in stereo, I send it to two mono tracks. I suppose editing an automation could be marginally easier using stereo tracks, but I just never think to try it out! On the subject of recording sources in stereo, I sometimes use...

The $300 Monitor Comparison (pick one)

Ahh, well when you travel in the upper echelons of audio like I do, price is no concern...</joke> I wouldn't advocate using headphones as being superior to nearfields, sorry if it came off that way. My point was that if you're in a room that's so small that you can't it a rack with a power...

The $300 Monitor Comparison (pick one)

I know what you're saying, but with many headphone amps, and some plug-ins, you can crossfeed signal with a frequency rolloff and .7 or so millisecond delay to simulate the experience of hearing in a room. I've mixed like this, and if you are careful, you can get a very good mix without ever...

The $300 Monitor Comparison (pick one)

I wasn't really saying that you can't get anything good for $300, I think you can. My point was that if the room is too small for an amp, any speakers are going to be a little compromised. Headphones are better in super small rooms.:)

    Drum micing dilemma!

Ribbon mics can make fantastic overheads, depending on the sound you're going for. They're generally figure-8, so they do capture some room, so if you're working in a room with low ceilings, they might not be best. What preamp are you using? Is the question in this thread about buying...

Good beginners guide to audio electronics?

There are lots of great kits out there for preamps, compressors, etc. You can learn a lot from existing gear, too. I really got started into it my racking 4 channels of a PM1000. From there, I have racked some other gear, and added Direct Outs to some vintage mic mixers (like the Yamaha M406...

    Mastering on a budget

It's pretty hard to bring up one instrument, especially from a live recording. If the bass is perfectly up the middle, and not much else is, you can use a M/S encoder to isolate the middle channel and boost, compress, eq it. Then you decode the M/S signal back to stereo. But if the bass is off...

The $300 Monitor Comparison (pick one)

In that case, I'd skip the monitors altogether and go with some good quality headphones. Just check your mixes on a few consumer stereos after you're done!

The $300 Monitor Comparison (pick one)

You might look around for a good pair of used passive monitors and an amp. Passive monitors are typically a lot cheaper, even new, and finding a decent power amp shouldn't be too hard. The good thing about buying used is that you can usually resell for close to the same price, so it's not as...

Getting Sound In__Which Route Would You Take?

Hey there, to answer your original question... I have a Line 6 Toneport that works pretty well. I think it'd be good for your application, the mic preamps arre pretty typical, simple, not too noisy, has phantom power, two mics at once, you can plug guitar into it directly, it has the usual...

    Facebook?

I think having a facebook page is nice, but I don't know how much traffic it'll generate. I would set up a page at bandcamp.com, with an option to sign up for your mailing list in order to download tracks.. Get your music on last.fm, with a link to you bandcamp page, for full downloads. Get a...

Guitar amp and condenser mic - how to

I use a condenser with a 57 sometimes, but I usually just put it on another speaker, about 4" back maybe. Just far enough back so it isn't clipping internally. the output will be hot, so you'll need a preamp with a pad, probably. I don't know about the 45º angle thing. I've done it in cases...

    Why Selling on iTunes SUCKS!

Harry Fox Agency has lots of info There's also something called Limelight, part of RightsFlow I don't have any real experience with either, myself, as I've always been in original bands, and worked with other bands doing all original music.

    Updated My Website, Comments?

Yeah, I've been thinking about that. I used to have it as a pop-up window, where the user had to click a link to open it, but could keep it open while they browsed the site. Might go back to that setup...

    Why Selling on iTunes SUCKS!

I think people have money (maybe the economy is doing poorly on average, but people still can spend some money.) The main issue I think is that people have come to expect music to be free. Obviously, there are lots of people who spend money, iTunes claims to have sold 6 billion songs, I think...

    Why Selling on iTunes SUCKS!

The process for clearing rights is pretty quick and easy if you: a) Do it before you record and release the cover. b) Make sure to pay the royalty on time. If you go ahead and release the song before clearing it, you can run into some problems, or so I've been told. I haven't had that...
