I downloaded the 14 day trial version over the weekend and it seems very powerful and user friendly. It seems to have a "Garage Band" kind of vibe going on. Seems fairly intuitive too. SERIOUSLY considering making the investment.

Monitors for sure. On a budget......consider used. Craigslist can be your friend. Considered "entry level" but, I just picked up a set of used M-Audio AV40 monitors for $65. Entry level gear but, that's where I'm at......entry level.

If you've ALWAYS had this problem with Fast Track, can you borrow an interface from a friend to try swapping out with yours? If it does it with every mic, sounds like you may have narrowed it down to either the mic input/output of the Fast Track or the DAW.
