I want:
tube ribbon mic,
tube condenser,
mixer (or summing box?)
software,
mic preamp,
cables,
etc.
Can you link me to some example systems or something? You're not being very helpful. I'm trying to learn something here.
actually I'm a student studying audio production, but only 3rd quarter. I don't actually plan to spend 10k on gear, this is for a homework assignment. I posted this in another forum but they told me to move it here. I really don't know where to begin with this. Hopefully some ideas can get me...
I forgot to mention I want to focus on sound quality for recording mainly acoustic instruments for jazz and blues stuff. Like jazz trios, quartets, blues, etc.
I need to come up with gear I would get if I had a 10k budget. What I have now is limited (mbox 2 + protools + mac mini, basically.) I would like to add an assortment of mics, a summing box (?,) a great mic preamp, software, and anything else I might need. My idea is to make a semi-transportable...

I would like to assemble a portable setup for live recording based on a 10k budget. I am going to use a mac mini + mbox2 + protools as the foundation. I would like to be able to record small group jazz/blues/acoustic music in various environments usually indoors. The things I am looking to spend...
Hi,
I am looking for a way to improve my sound recordings. Here's a sample of what I have done so far:
cooljb2
Current setup includes a studio projects B1 condenser mic
presonus tubepre with JJ 12ax7, drive adjusted to 10-11 o'clock, gain at 9-11
using my dads pc with realtek card now...
im lazy, cant I just turn the volume down some or hit the 20db pad? I sometimes need to unplug the mic and plug it back in to remove it from the tripod. Is this really dangerous? Is this unit gentle on tubes? I have some nice tubes I like using in it.
What about using a ribbon mic for recording sax? Someone recommended this to me as a possible option along with the Senn dynamic mics. Also, I do notice this brightness issue you have mentioned.
Do I have to be careful when connecting or disconnecting equipment while it is on or loud noises to the mic, like causing my TubePre to clip a lot, is this going to damage or wear down the tube faster?
Yep, I have experimented and the windscreen works great for my Studio Projects B1 when used as a vocal mic. For recording my sax I definately want to take off the windscreen to avoid a muffled sound.
I've got a Studio Projects B1 microphone, it came with a windscreen. I got good results using the windscreen when speaking or singing into the microphone up close to my face. I am wondering if I might get similar benefits using it to record tenor sax, which is held further away (1-2 feet.) What...
Being a fan of a "smooth yet detailed" sound I think a ribbon mic might be a nice choice for an upgrade later.
btw about recording a stereo vs using headphones, I like to be able to hear myself play and prefer the natural sound of speakers to practice with. But I see where you are coming from...
Thanks. Yes, I do notice the shape of the room affecting the sound. I am planning on building a door to cover the doorway in the middle, so that the room is square. Other than that I don't want to do too much because it's my living room. Here is one that I think came out a little better and it...
Hi,
I have taken a photograph of the microphone setup in my living room and posted it along with a recording of me playing.

For that recording, that is the position of the mic and I am standing 1-2 feet away. The settings on the pre-amp were:
Drive: 7
Gain: 7.5...
I'm using a PreSonus TubePre with Studio Projects B1 and E-mu 1212M. I would like some suggestions on how to best use this equipment for recording my tenor sax. Right now I like to put the gain on around 8 and I'm trying the drive now at 11:00 o'clock or so. I like tubey sounds. I am also using...
