    Guitar Amp Mic Options

Look for a CAD e100 on ebay, you can score them for $125 if you have some patience. Great guitar amp mics for live and studio, and great for lots of other things too. It's a supercardioid condenser. My other go-to is the AT 4033. With respect to the other members of the board, if you have...

    RNP Burn In Time?

Except for speakers, which take only a few minutes, burn-in is pretty much a myth.

    Eq

Cutting adds phase shift as well. Eqs add phase shift whether they are cutting or boosting. Problems that arise from boosting include extra noise, since noise gets boosted along with signal, and maybe some ringing or increased resonance at extreme boost levels. Phase shift, however, is not...

    WIRELESS MONITORING On stage

Don't bother with the iPod thing- they barely go five feet even in the perfect situation. And you'd have to interface it with your system. IMO- for cheap, go wired. And I'd bet in the long run getting a real setup will be less hassle and expense than a cobbed-together wireless rig. Maybe...

    Cannot Squash The Vocals Enough

Yup. One of the uses of a compressor is to bring up the average level of the signal. This means the noise floor comes up as well. That's why you want to make sure your system noise is a low as possible, and that you record in a friendly-sounding environment.:)

    Looking for live, omni condenser

Omnis are fine in the right hands. Here's a link to an article on the DPA website about using omnis live: http://www.dpamicrophones.com/ The key is getting close enough to get a good ratio of direct to indirect sound. I'm not sure how easy this would be micing an ensemble- it might be...

To run a long speaker cable or not to run a long speaker cable?

Nice table. The things to notice are that lower load impedances result in more loss, and that even in the worst case scenario listed, 100ft of 18ga. running into a 4ohm load, the loss is less than 50%....that is, less than 3db.

To run a long speaker cable or not to run a long speaker cable?

It's more about the impedance of the system involved, which is very low compared to a mic or instrument situation. Low impedance means cable capacitance is basically meaningless, and cable capacitance is the main culprit in signal degradation in instrument and mic situations. More voltage by...

    Cannot Squash The Vocals Enough

It took me a minute to sort it out too.:p Sorry you couldn't make it to the Rush show. Maybe not, though, it was the worst sounding concert I've ever seen. All kick drum, with this high screechy sound that I think was Geddy's voice coming out every once in awhile.:( Maybe their soundguy should...

    Cannot Squash The Vocals Enough

 A mic into a pre with a compressor inserted, and then off to a recorder is pretty common.

    Mic Gain

Go to a big bookstore and read a basic PA setup book. Not so much for the whole gain structure thing, but for speaker placement, and other basics. If you do have an EQ, consider tying it into the monitors instead of the mains, or running in mono and using one side of the eq for mains and the...

No Phase reverse... what do i do?

I saw that, and was curious- does it say whether it can be used with non-stereo tracks? Like say- two snare tracks?

    Using windshileds with dynamic mics

I use them sometimes if I have multiple bands in one night- I do sound at a local club or two- if you have a Beta57 kicking around maybe try that as well....I find it to be a little more pleasing on those voices (both male and female) that are allergic to Beta58s.
