A cheaper alternative to the ART MP might be the "behringerosaurus" MIC100. Thoguh its strange on mic for voice, it works with a bass... And is less than 50$ here in Germany -- dunno the prices anywhere else...

Though I'm a compression addict, when it's overdone, there just one thing to do:
RETRACK...
So even I most often track with rather slight gain reduction (6-12dB) I have sincere doubt's that you'll be able to save anything with overcompressed vocals. It kindof depends what your...
Even I would say: not a job for compression; thats just the thing where DAWs shine... I really compress everything to f***, but that's probably not a job for a compressor...
The only thing that MIGHT (but that would be REALLY difficult) need some dynamic treatment could be the OH in a sense...
I only own a vs880EX and a 1680, but afaik, no inserts on the roland. But with a roland you might prefer something like an audio buddy or rnp as pre anyway. The pres imho arew not too good with the roland. I heard the yammie pres were not too bad, but ...
Imho, the yammie compression is nicer...
The only 'stereo like' thing I could think of is to use several mics on the same track to avoid clipping on louder parts. That MAY help in comping a good track in the end...
YMMV

...and that honest comment gave you a rep point ;)
I would be very curious about how the sound ended up, as I had the impression that the drums were a little buried in the mix and there was a little conflict with bass and drum and/or guitar... What I really liked was your middle and high end...
Definitely two tracks. Maybe you're loosing too much distortion? Don't try to improve the sound of the tracks by listening on their own; only in the mix. You might try to compress the tracks (I like that better than uncompressed guitar tracks on punk rock songs -- I know a lot don't... I even...
A lot of good tips out there...
I think you should also try some other things: do not quantize every single drum track. Bass drum and hihat quantized, the rest not. Using multiple patterns may also help alot.
I own a XL-7 and added some additional tricks, but I dunno whether they are possible...
Because of the pattern of the mic. I assume using a unidirectional wouldn't be of much use in that strategy... I assume by recording the 3 guys several times you'll have a much fatter sound (even if U use a cardioid and always have one predominant voice on every track, the other two fatten up a...
Why does everyone wanna have that 'pro' sound???
I always think of the status of the studio owner as the pro or amateur status. If the owner makes his income majority with the studio, I'd say, it is a pro studio. That of course does not say too much about the studio's quality.
A similar thing...
You might also try at yahoo, there is a group about the 4416 and you should find the inofficial site there...

I was VERY interested in the 4416 and what I liked about it was the IMHO better dynamics. I would have bought a waves cards with it and then I think you still have a KILLER machine...
Don't forget one simple thing: COMPLEXITY. Not every system CAN in fact be foreseen... There are systems so sensitive to parameter changes, that you'll have completely different result after a certain time, that the numerical rounding errors lead to completely different results when you switch...
Hardly understand what you write, but...
I found the vs880ex quite easy to use, but you might have a look at www.vsplanet.com
A lot of people there complain, that the beast is very hard to understand... IMHO, it depends how experience you have with recording/mxing in general...

I assume you'd better learn to use compression right... Do a search in here for compression, and you should be able to read a bunch of good tips...There are graphical tools where you can determine any compression curve, but you end in the same problems: either you use the compression (timing)...
Hey firby!
I have slight doubts in the described results. In my experience, socks NEVER disappear while being recorded with a toob amp. The toob warmth keeps the four-dimensional beasts warm, so they don't NEED your socks...
C'mon - be honest...

The worlds formula finally found
Are they searching their socks??
Now I understand so much more. supra conduction: the electrons keep urgently searching for their socks as it gets too cold... Supra conductivity: the same thing for molecules... Heisenbergs uncertainty relation: No one knows...
