HR design and build thread part III - The build.

It looks like the bridge I drew allows for string spacings from 2" to 2 3/16" (50.80mm to 55.56mm). With all the saddles in the center position it should give us standard Gibson spacing. That works for me.

It's a personal preference. Do you want to go with a standard Fender nut width? If so, do you prefer 41.275 or 42.8625"?

I had something far more complicated in mind.

I have the total string spacing at the nut at 1.6" and the nut at 1 13/16" That may be wider than you would prefer. Tell me what you want and I'll make the adjustment. The Schaller bridge in the drawing is the one Stewart Macdonald sells. The string spacing at the bridge is 2.06". (They publish...

I narrowed the pickups by 1/8", made the bridge pickup longer to compensate for the wider polepiece spacing, and increased the angle. This looks better to my eye. What do you guys think?

I wonder if you could find some ivoroid or MOTS to mold. The right color MOTS would kick ass.

BOTH!!!!!!:) I drew it independently but I noticed how similar they were. I didn't mind a bit. I hope you didn't.

I didn't know what bridge you were going with. That will have some bearing on the pickup angle. I just modified the pickup covers on the old drawing so you could see what I had in mind. I'll redo it when a bridge is specified. I hope some dimensions are available. Meanwhile, here is a headstock...

This just shows the pickups I'm describing. I'd like to angle the one at the bridge, only because I think I would like the look.

I read somewhere that a wider (flatter) coil is warmer than a taller (narrower) coil. I have no idea if that's true, but if it is it has bearing on the shape. If it were my guitar I would want the neck pickup to be very warm. If the above is true, I would lean toward keeping about the P-90...

    Doing up a Squier?

I've played quite a few Squires that were excellent guitars. The problem is that you have to play quite a few to find a good one. If you're thinking of going this route you'll need to buy a local guitar and you may have to do alot of legwork. You may find the original pickups satisfactory...

I was thinking along these lines exactly. I don't understand the wire winding well enough to know whether or not the values you propose wil get anywhere close to matching the output of the two pickups, but that would be what I would shoot for. I'd rather add overwinding to the Tele pickup than...

    I'm building a new guitar

Hello JCH, The build looks great so far. I hate myself for my lack of gumption. I've got a couple of designs of my own that I never seem to find time for. I'm looking forward to the pickup discussion when it gets going. Thanks for your contributions.

Won't the controls layout and the soundhole design have some bearing on the shape of the cavities? I say just make them as large as practical. In keeping with the surf guitar theme I vote for single coil pickups. I really like the look of the pickups on Paul Bigsby's guitars of the late 40s...

So, as to the headstock, 1) Three on a side 2) Six on a side 3) 4 X 2 4) 5 X 1 I personnaly dislike numbers 3 and 4. I figure if we can get this much sorted, we can go from there. I'd be glad to draw some headstocks if I can find out what people want. On the chambers, For the mock-up with...

Hey Muttley, I'm excited to see you're taking up this project again. If you're using an opaque finish on this test guitar it doesn't matter what you use on the top. For a "real" one I second the suggestion of walnut. Even better if you used a contrasting strip of thick veneer to dress up the...
