    I'm retarded tonight...does Shinybox have a pre?

I've seen one on their website, but no price... Bodhisan

    Anyone use metal pop filters?

You don't need a pop filter. Set your mike up (above) so that your air is blowing just below it. When you sing, you're explusion actually goes about 45 degrees below your mouth. Screw the pop filter. Record clean. If you don't believe me, record a few different tracks singing at differrent...

    AEA TRP, The Ribbon Pre

It's not a matter of the strength of the preamp. It's a matter of the strength of your input/source. If you've got a soft guitar or vocal, using ANY inexpensive mic and preamp is going to give you some background hiss. I don't care if you've got 75 db (or 100) of gain; If your input is soft...

    Fiddle Microphone?

Petimar -- you're right, and sometimes I get nice recorded fiddle with just the ribbon if I'm lazy, pushing up the high eq, but it's nice to get it with the AKG as a 2nd mike and not eq (basically the same results, just...snazzier). Bodhisan

    Fiddle Microphone?

Shiny Box (the cheapest one -- don't have the number in front of me) about a foot away, 6" above the fiddle, and then I use an AKG451B about three feet away, about a foot higher than the box (fiddle). Both into SP VTB-1's. Dial in your sound. Compression reels it all in. For me. And like...

How do you get track names to show up?

    Thank ya. Much appreciated.

How do you get track names to show up?

When I stick my own CDs into my computer to play on a software, none of the tracks are identified. Just "unknown artist" track one. I use CD Architect 5.0.

CAD M9 vs Studio Projects T3

The figure 8 on the T3 is great for recording acoustic guitar, if you like close miking at the 12/14 fret area. None of the boominess gets into the side of the mike. Bodhisan

Best kick drum mic for many styles of music

For me, I just got the best result in any of my endeavors by dropping an AKG451B over the front of the kick (like draping a mic over an amp), just above a cut-out hole, which gave me the warmest, fullest, deepest sound of anything I've tried. I also had a T3 about four feet above on the kick...

Stereo Realistic Condenser with 1/4" Jacks

Uh...that's hilarious. Walked over to it sitting on the dryer, unscrewed it, saw there was a battery compartment, and...I'll give her a try. $40 would be a good profit, and I just bought a lefty '86 Japanese Fender Tele and need to convince my wife there are things I'm selling to help pay for...

Stereo Realistic Condenser with 1/4" Jacks

Dual Pattern Stereo Electret Microphone System 33-919. Found it at a thrift store in good shape. If this is, indeed, a condenser (which is the claim on the box), it needs phantom power, and my preamp only takes XLR connectors for a condensor mike. My thoughts are to sell this, but would like...

    Breakin' in a mic?

Over at a steel guitar forum I frequent, the raves have been over the newest steel amp from Peavey, a 12" cabinet (steelers for the past 40 years had preferred 15" speakers in steel amps), yet it's been claimed you need to "break the speaker in" before it sounds good, i.e. some people run a CD...

Since I heard that the Shure SM81 was used for the Eagles Acoustic Guitar, I want 2

...this could be heaven, or this could be hell...

My God, a stunning thing happened.

As a recording enthusiast, I understand the road to great sound, but just an evil reminder: most listeners don't give a rat's ass as to the perfect highs, lows, and mids in a song -- or the room it was recorded in...they just want a good song. An illuminate to my age: I remember buying "Hey...

    Digital....Disappointment

Tango in the Night was recorded at The Slope in Bel Air, California in...1986...I'm sure it was still analog, however.

    Post-song, compression room noise...

I've been just doing quicker fades, but...is there a trick to dealing with the room noise that becomes audible after the release on a compressed track, i.e. a bass track for instance, that you don't necessarily want to fade out that quick?

I've got an MBOX - new microphones or new preamp?

Get a C1. If you're a solo musician (recording things one at a time), you can use it for just about everything, from miking a nonrock snare to cabinets, to most any acoustic instrument, to vocals. Even a kick drum.

    Studio Projects C1

Oh, I love this. I've said it before, too (doesn't make it true, although I believe it to be true) about the idgits here who bash Chinese mics. The C1 has a "shine" that you need. Listen to any good commercial recording, and you'll hear what people here define as a "harshness" to the vocal...

    DMP3 vs VTB1

Like I said, my problem was fixed by putting in a new tube (thanks to Alan's simple directions on the PMI board). I'm a huge fan of the VTB-1's, and became one quickly after reading Harvey's review then acquiring my first one. When I bought my AEA R84, I took the mic and one of the VTB-1's...

Anybody changed the tube in their T3?

I'd like to just for the heck of it. Is it as simple as opening up the box and there it'll be? Changing out in the VTB-1 was involved, but easy. I was going to post this on the PMI forum, but can't get in...
