    Les Pauls: Gibson vs. Epiphone

I've played alot and own a few of each. Are the Epi's anywhere even close to the Gibson's. No. Are the Epi's better than most other guitar's in that price range. Yes. I've got 2 Epi's, a Double Cutaway Jr. ($175 bolt on), and a double Cutaway Special ($350 set neck). Both have P90's, and...

    Anybody have/played a Matchless???

I love guitar sound Johnny Hickman from Cracker gets, and he and Dave Lowery only used Matchless amps. They cost alot, and nobody anywhere around here ever stocks any. What I'd like, is to hear from anyone who has or had one. What model, how do you like it, and where can I get one? Thanks in...

    producer contract/agreement

Your wise to get it all in writing, and if you do get on a soundtrack, or are picked up for distribution, you will need all these clearances. If you sign a distribution deal, YOU will be paying the producer his 3 pts on the GROSS, (before breakage, promo, and return deductions). The 10,000...

Would you buy a guitar you haven't played?

I've bought 2 guitars on Ebay, and was thrilled with both. One was just an Epiphone LP Jr Dbl Cutaway, but I couldn't find a dealer in my area that had one in TV Yellow. The other was a Gibson Les Pauls Gem series, which are tough to find because they were only made for 3 years. Only place I...

    Sick Of Tuning.....Floyd Rose

Tom's suggestion is the best. I've told many to do the same. I played with a guy once who had machined a metal plate to replace the springs, but unfortunately he never mass produced them them. Jeff

    Approaching a new song...

I usually pick it up, and "hear" a riff, melody or chord in my head, and pick them out. I'll play it repeatedly until I can imagine how it will be accompanied and where it will go. I know alot of people just use trial and error, and it will work for them. Because I make my living as a guitar...

    gimme giant hands...

I have very short fingers, but they can stretch quite well thanks to years of practice. By playing with just 3 fingers you'll just make the 4th weaker. Practice playing triads like below. Always keep the first finger down on the 2nd note while playing the 3rd note. Fingers are at the bottom...

"stars" succeed with weak songs - WHY?

I miss Milli Vanilli. They at least made me laugh. Nothing funnier than an interview with 2 guys who can't speak English, but who were supposed to have sung all those hits. The craps always been around, but I can't remember it always being this bad. Where are Young MC and Musical Youth when...

    Effects Loop problems

Did this happen with the amp clean? It will happen alot with the amp dist on since most amps have the fx loop after the distortion. The hot signal level coming out of the Dist can frequently cause feedback on reverb or delay patches. Jeff

    Repair-It Yourself

I've replaced up to 3 frets on a guitar due to wear, and wouldn't try a whole neck. It's far too time consuming. You can probably buy a new neck for less than it would cost to have someone do it. Jeff

Intonation on cheap and expensive guitars

PChorman I too play LP's and haven't had your problem, although I prefer my action a little higher than most. Also, on a couple of guitars with the same bridge (LP spec and 70's Yamaha), I ended up flipping the saddle on either the D or G. On students guitars, I've frequently found cheaper...

Intonation on cheap and expensive guitars

Let me know what you think PChorman. The other reason I prefer is that the frets are laid as if the neck were perfectly straight. But once strings are on, it needs to have a slight arc. 12th fret is closer to the centre of the arc which is a further distance scale than at the end of an arc...

Intonation on cheap and expensive guitars

Tom Hate to belabour the point. I know 12th fret is most common. I'm just saying 19th has proved more accurate for me. To dismiss it out of hand is to deny not only pure physics, but any chance of progress. Don't write it off until you've tried it. I've been at this almost as long as...

Intonation on cheap and expensive guitars

My theory on sharp vs flat keys is that the # keys sound happier because we're able to use more open strings. Open strings sound brighter than fretted notes, and the first 5 flats represent all our open strings (BEADG). With sharps however the first 2 are F & C, so with equal number of...

Intonation on cheap and expensive guitars

Tom: Try this for yourself. Take a guitar where the intonation is off, and check the difference between the fretted and harmonic at 12th. Now do the same at 19th fret. Notice that any discrepancy is exagerated at the 19th fret. Some things that sound pretty close @ 12th are pretty off...

new bass player - amp question

Skip the Ampegs until you've got a road crew. As much as my ears (and chest cavity) love them, by back loathes them. Jeff

Intonation on cheap and expensive guitars

Perfection can't ever be reached, but you can come close. Anyone who says setting the intonation at 12th fret only puts things in place around the 12th fret isn't doing it right. The process of setting intonation sets the scale length for the whole neck, so if you set each string right it...
