Possibly the next great midrange pre

Neve, maybe you could explain the impedance thing a little further. My (poor) understanding of the issue is that the input impedance of the preamp just needs to be high enough so that the mic can swing the voltage accurately without running out of current. Also, I would think that the input...

How to convert WAV to MP3 at CD Quality.....

Good thread guys. So I've read all the links and understand all the theory-- the problem is, it hasn't worked for me. Using CDex, I've encoded the same .wav to mp3 with LAME at 196kbps, then also with the VBR at levels 0, 1, and 4. The good news-- the VBR files are substantially smaller...

As Well As I Can See You

thanks guys. I definitely plan to go back and add a solo and some vocal harmonies-- I was just kinda testing out the new gear. Anyways, the areas I know I'm weak in are things like how much to compress the vocals and how much reverb, etc. I guess if nobody's cringing and covering their ears...

As Well As I Can See You

Well, here's my first try with posting an mp3 from something done in the home studio. I would appreciate honest feedback on the song "As Well As I Can See You", particularly the overall sound quality. I'm not thrilled with the quality of the mp3 format, but it's the best I can do for now...

Opinions on the Marshall MXL 2001?

I have not heard the 2001. I recently bought the V93 (Mars's version of the 2003) and I love it. From what I've heard there is a big difference betweent the 2001 and 2003. BTW, I got the V93 for about $150 with shockmount at mars.

    V67 discontinued?

Just went to Mars to pick up a V67... apparently Mars is no longer carrying them. What gives? Marshall's not going to discontinue them, are they?

Hey Philboy, you mentioned a taylor guitars forum... can you tell me where I can find it? thanks

I'm going to bitch about Martin Guitars...

Hey JR, I think it was the breedlove C12 I played. It played beautifully, but the design was a little funky for my liking and it seemed like the taylor played equally well for a lower price. It was a strong 2nd, I liked it better than everything except the taylor I bought and one very...

I'm going to bitch about Martin Guitars...

Hey Vicstring, I have the 714ce too, what an amazing guitar. I've had mine for over a year now, used at home and for gigging. All I can say is BE CAREFUL with it-- that cedar top is awfully soft, and takes barely more than a touch to scratch or dent it. I'm still in mourning from the day I...

For those intereseted in do-it-yourself Neve preamps...

Just curious why you guys are in favor of PS regulation? From what I understand (not nearly as much as I probably should) regulators can constrain the current through the PS during sharp transients. I'd appreciate your views on the compromise. re: power supply construction, I agree it should...

For those intereseted in do-it-yourself Neve preamps...

those xformers are all input/output. A pretty good power supply would probably be pretty cheap though because of the low current requirement. A nice toroidal transformer from avel-lindberg would probably run about $20 (recommended for low noise), maybe $10 for good rectifier diodes, another...

    ART pre amps?

I have the original Tube MP and I haven't had such good luck with it. I never got to the point where I could objectively judge the sound because the background noise is so bad that I can't really even use it. And this is after it's been sent in for service... If I were to do it again I would...

    Behringer VX2000

Thanks again. I'm pretty certain it's the Tube MP that's noisy; I've gone straight from mic, to TMP, to 4track, balanced the whole way, and the hum is persistent. It dissapears when removing the TMP and plugging the mic straight to the 4track. I've done it with and without a power...

    Behringer VX2000

thanks for your prompt response, Mikeh. How did the preamps in the vocal pro/voicemaster stack up to the Tube MP? I would also be using the MXL V67. I must admit my experience with the MP has been bad, it has always had a very noticeable hum, even after being sent in for service.

    Behringer VX2000

Anyone here have experience with the Behringer Vocal Pro? Any impressions from experienced users would be appreciated. I would be using it for recording into a Tascam 4 track or direct into computer; my desire is to have a good clean mic preamp with phantom power (at least better than my...

    424mkII punch in POP?

Hey guys, Just wondering if I'm the only one who has troubles with the auto-punch on my MKII. About 1 out of 3 times, I'll get a noticeable POP on the track that's being punched. I've been mixing down to the computer and fixing it digitally, but it's really a pain. Anything I can do to reduce...

    Auralex LENRD bass traps

I have 6 of the LENRD's in a small room and I'm happy with them. I cannot compare them to DIY bass traps; for me the LENRDs were a better option than DIY given the cost of materials and investment of time. The tubetak glue works very well at holding them in place too. "The piano has been...

    micing guitar with a 57

I've done home recordings of voice and guitar with a 57 and a Tascam 424mkII 4-track for a while, and I've been able to get results that I'm very happy with, even by comparison to recordings I've done in pro studios. It took some experimentation but this has been my experience so far: - not...

    Pre-amp's a hummin...

Ahh, the dreaded ART hum. I have the tube MP and, despite all the good recommendations from the forums, I think it is LOUSY. The thing is just way too noisy, it hums like mad no matter what I do. I have tried it in 3 or 4 different locations, I have tried power conditioning, I have tried...
