i like to change my set-up from time to time. I have a standard 5 piece tama kit with an added 10" tom. I usually have the 10" on the rack and the 12" & 13" as my floor toms. Lately I have put all three on the rack and brought out the 16" on the floor. I think smaller toms are easier to tune!!

if you can upgrade your existing desk top to use just in the studio, and buy a laptop for everything else, i STRONGLY advise it, mainly because it is a pain in the a$$ to plug all that gear in every time you "Have an Idea" for a song. Plus the hard drive issue, expandability, etc.

But will the partitions "slow down" performance at all? I have a 1.4ghz 2g ram puter with an external firewire drive for audio. newly formatted my drive into 3 partitions. 4g for os, 20g for daw software, and the rest for whatever else. any comments?

if im reading this right, make sure it is a momentary switch so that it is only engaged when your foot is on the switch... Whale bone has a great test, but wouldn't that be the same as having no cable connected at all? my guess is a momentary normally open switch.
