    Otari MX5050 8 track repro popping/crackling

Honestly don't know, I'm inexperienced compared to many of the guys in here.

Speakers near 16 track bad idea?

Got a rule of thumb for distance between tape deck and speakers?

Using a demagnetisizer for deleting old tapes?

But there's no way of messing up anything major in trying? The metal reels won't cause damage to heads because of some weird magnetism? Assuming that the demag drags out magnetism and it's made for the metal parts of the tape deck I guess not? Sorry about the load dumb questions, just wanna...

Using a demagnetisizer for deleting old tapes?

Hey guys! I read somewhere that you can use a demagnetisizer as a poor mans bulk eraser on 1/4" and 1/2" tapes? Got shitloads of old, nice sounding 1/4" AGFA-tapes and would prefer not to put unnessesacry mileage to our Fostex M80. What's your experience? I'm aware that I should keep the...

    Sticky Shed Help Thread

Sounds just great! I'll get it then. Thanks guys. Wouldn't dream about trying to fix SSS-tapes for new recordings. EDIT: Rereading your post you mention thhat "the tape issue with 3M 996 is not sticky-shed per se". Would it mean that there's other common problems with 996?

    Sticky Shed Help Thread

Good some reels of half inch 3M 996 on my hands for 17 dollars/12 pounds each. There's some mixed opinions whether this tape has a shedding problem. Any way of identifying the bad rolls from the good ones? Unlike Ampex 456 there's a whole lot of confusion on this subject. Would it be fine on a...

    Otari MX5050 8 track repro popping/crackling

Sounds unlikely to be causing the problem then. I was thinking about big, heavy PA speaker standing close to the deck. Did you demag? You should do that frequently no matter if you're encountering problems or not.

TSR-8 How often should I be cleaning the heads? Tape issues?

No matter which tape your using you should always clean the heads before each session. All tapes leave a bit on the heads and it's not always visible - if it's there more dropouts will occur and the high frequencys will become less present. Also your machine will last much longer if you always...

    Soundcraft 1" 16 track

Browsing Soundtrack 24-track machines many people tend to dislike them strongly for their lack of reliability. Anyone here has personal experience with this? My friend had a 24-track from Soundcraft that broke down really quickly but he could have been unlucky or used Ampex 456 (he had lots of...

    Otari MX5050 8 track repro popping/crackling

Could it have any saying if the Otari is too close to anything heavily magnetic like big speakers? Just a wild guess. Have you demagged the machine since buying?

    Debating Analog or Digital

Some youngsters actually knows how to play. To me analog is easier as you won't have to mess around for ages just to make the recording sound acceptable - if you knows how to play and knows how to record it'll usually sound very good with minimal EQing. To me, doing a song is difficult there's...

    HELP! Tascam 388 dropout emergency!

A bit of drop outs and/or frequency loss is perfectly normal on the edge tracks for narrow track machines like the 388 or any kind of Fostex. A common workaround is to use the edge tracks for something that'll be picked out by other mics, like the bass drum - or for something that isn't required...

    YamahaMT8X

You mean when you mix down to digital in stereo? Guess it's just the way it is - at least when we're mixing down to DAW, the sound card reproduces the volume at much weaker volumes than the "phones out" on the desk. You'll either have to learn how to do mastering (and please don't use new music...

    Mono'ing Bass In Mastering stage

There's Beatles-stuff were the bass is panned hard. So it seems to be possible without the pickup skipping or dancing all over the place. But perhaps it takes other sacrifices? Anyone can shed some light on this? I do love stereo wideness, also on the low frequencies.

Mix/Recent Masters sound great in my headphones, but has digital distortion in car?

Could be the car stereo, unless the loud commercially released record was poorly mastered. Try it on another crappy/mediocre stereo where you got the time to test it with reference CD's that you know well. Another option could be that you've been recorded it in a higher bit rate than 16 which...

    Fostex G-16S Bad Caps?

I might be wrong, sorry about that man. Made assumptions too quickly due to the widespread reputation of Ampex and shedding. Although sticky ones do appear, probably due to wrong storage or something The one we got with our G16C was shedding quite heavily but was probably just unlucky. Good...

    Fostex G-16S Bad Caps?

As a rule of thumb Ampex 456 is useless yeah, though there are guys who knows how to find the few batches that don't have the problem. Most Quantegy 456 should be fine though. We need to wait for Beck to anwer this one - or you might find the right info on the "SSS help thread". Funnily enough...

    Fostex G-16S Bad Caps?

Sticky shed can go horribly wrong. The closest I've ever gotten to serious repair work was changing the motor in a Tascam 38, had the thing working for half an hour with Ampex 456 tape. Then it started slowing down. I thought "well, nevermind. It's been inactive for a few years, just need to get...

    Fostex G-16S Bad Caps?

What tapes are you using? If it's your old Ampex 456 or 499 from back then it's probably just sticky shed syndrome. I once passed on a Fostex E16 because of similar (but worse) symptoms only to find out later that the machine was fine and the only reason it didn't work was because of shitty...

Exporting 96 khz/32 bit float from Audacity

I can hear the difference between 44100/16 and 96000/32 bit float. Probably 32 bit float is overkilll compared to 24 but as we'd started doing mixdowns that way we better stick to it to avoid any complications. But overkill to use higher than 16? You must be joking man. Don't tell me that a...
