I Have to get an amp

If you can find one get a Vox Defiant or Conquerer. They're solid state but sounds freakin' amazing. On one channel you can play loud as fuck while keeping the clean sound, on the other you can get a real bitey british invasion sort of distortion. They was made between '67 and roughly '73...

    Proper spring reverb

Yeah, a homemade one might be an option too. I got a friend who's into electronics. So far I've been too occupied recording to test the EM300 in an effects loop but in general terms I'd love a warmer spring sound than this desk has to offer. But it's terrific as a preamp.

    Proper spring reverb

Yeah, I might just use the effects send/return on the Fostex 820 to send to the Yamaha EM300 or use the direct outs on the Fostex 820 sending to the the channels on the EM300. Though I fear it'll build up too much noise but better give it a go. I just like convinience of sweep EQ and mute...

    Real Oktava 319's?

Got one a week ago, love it so far. It has already seen a lot of action as a drum overhead. The ones one the picture looks identical to mine. Though I got mine slightly cheaper than this,

Cheap, nice sounding overhead for drums

Ended up with an Octava MK-319. It's nice and dark sounding, picking up the ambience really well and doesn't have the horrible "presence peak" aka. harshness of many other cheap mics. Might get another one soon. And some silver bullets. Oh the GAS...

    Proper spring reverb

That's some pretty good advice guys! Don't know if I need it to be in stereo, I kindda like the thing that happens on old PA desks with the all wet-signal being send to the right channel if you hard pan a track but I asume the thing has to be integrated to the desk in order to do that?

    Proper spring reverb

Was wondering which inexpensive standalone spring reverbs is out there? Also I'm considering buying a Roland PA-150 to grab it's reverb for a standalone unit. Would that be relatively easy and affordable? It's no prob for me to identify the reverb inside the desk.

Most expensive mic you've ever used

Newer Neumann U87. Unfortunately I only used it for tracking tambourine on a digital setup as my teacher had the day off and wasn't there to say no to me using it. It was very good as I usually hate the sound of cymbals and tambourines on digital but using this thing they sounded decent. Would...

Cheap, nice sounding overhead for drums

Hey there! I'm looking for a very cheap but nice sounding overhead mic for drums. So far we'd been using a matched pair of GA Projects and recently a Røde M3. Like the sound of both, especially the Røde M3. But it's borrowed from a friend and I'm wondering what other mics in the same range...

    Syncing two Fostex machines

You certainly are! It really cleared things up for me. I'll just download the manual for the syncroniser - combined with your explanation I think I'm good to go. Thanks again!

Fostex 820 desk - phantom power?

Nice opportunity. When it's time for mixdowns I think we'll send the tracks into the inputs instead of the tape return as adding some extra gain can be quite pleasant to the ear. I start to like this desk more and more, it's easy getting used to. Fostex is criminally underrated. The only real...

    Syncing two Fostex machines

Wow, this seems very tricky indeed. But why can I only use the Model 80 as the master? And does that mean that the basic tracks have to be done using that? Cause at the moment we're feeding nine inputs at the time while cutting the basic tracks. Probably we should just stick with the G16 and...

    Syncing two Fostex machines

I was wondering what is the basics if I'm gonna syncronise our Fostex G16 and Model 80. The G16 has a built in sync unit. It'll make a total track number of 22, right? As far as I've got it the sync code will be on track 16. We're recording a lot these days and I'm trying to fix this before we...

Fostex 820 desk - phantom power?

You have to use a switch to go between using the channel as a preamp or for mixdown/monitoring. Does that make it an inline console? I'd never really understood the term.

Fostex 820 desk - phantom power?

Thanks so much mate! So there's just one switch? Would that be a problem when tracking a whole band live in a room with only the drum overheads having the need for phantom power?

Fostex 820 desk - phantom power?

Just got a Fostex 820 desk in decent condition for very cheap. It sounds really beefy yet with enough clarity. The odd thing is that I can't figure if it's with phantom power or not. The manual claims it has phantom power though there's no way to find it while looking on the channel strips...

    Tascam MSR16 and 3M 996 tape

I had the same experience using it on our Fostex G16 which should be very similar to your Tascam. It was fine for tracking some friends who wanted to transfer to digital and mix in the box, but definitely not for mixing and dubbing in the analog domain like I usually do. Everything slows...

    separate tracks from mixer

To answer the original questions; you'll need a desk with direct outs. This means that each channel is sending directly to whatever tool you use for recording. A soundcard with eight inputs could be what you're looking for, lots of them have phantom power too.

    Tascam MS-16 no passing audio

Have you tried playing back tapes you recorded from before the problem occured? In case these are fine the problem might be in the desk or whatever you used as a preamp. Now this might sounds overtly simple and this could very well be the first thing you tested but in case not you should try.

    Sony tape?

Wouldn't know about the particular tape but if I were you I'd put in on while watching out for signs that it's sticky shed. If the machine ain't slowing down and there's no significant goo on the heads or path you should be fine with using it. If you don't wanna waste a good performance on a...
