Calibrating during the recording of an album

How do I test the frequency response on the G16? Printing sine waves from the tone generator in Audacity at five different frequencies and see how playback correspond to aiming at 0 while using "input monitor" mode? I honestly don't like the sound of Dolby C, at least not on uncalibrated...

Calibrating during the recording of an album

I've got a bit of a dilemma. Our little studio is getting kindda busy and some friends have just moved in. As our G16 is running a bit much they're thinking about getting another 1/2" 16 track so we don't have worry too much about wear and breakdowns. We've found another G16 for a good price...

Noob question about 2 Track Recording.

A Revox A77 or B77 would be able to record on just one track. But I think you'll archieve a better resoult if you record the instruments in stereo, bounce to the computer and sending a guide mono track back to the tape recorder, dub the vocals, send it back to the computer and line the vocal...

Fostex G16: no signal on track 2

It's totally bizarre but when the repair guy got it it was fine and it was running smooth yesterday. Credits to him being honest enough to tell me. So it seems that talking your G16 to a trip to the other side of town solves this issue  Don't know what happened. I'm even using the...

Fostex G16: no signal on track 2

It will either record or play from track two. But I just made an appointment with the repair guy as I risk screwing something over when switching card. However I'll record back when our beloved machine is back on track so there's more knowledge about the issue.

Fostex G16: no signal on track 2

Could be relays, however I have no idea how to check it. Great idea with flipping the tape over. It's the Dolby C version. Well, it is sending 1 to 9, etc and have always done so. Of course it won't record on them unless I arm them :) AFAIK this is perfectly normal behaviour for Fostex...

Fostex G16: no signal on track 2

Today I was mixing down some stuff and the snare drum on track 2 was gone - it seemed bizarre and I concluded that it was probably just some gunk on the heads. But after cleaning the heads I tried to just sending an MP3 to the machine while in input mode to rule out dirt as a factor. No signal...

    Oxide build up on heads

I used to have a tape eating Fostex R8. There might be a serious issue with the transport, some sharp edges or something like that.

Article: Vinyl Sales Growing as Digital Sales Decline

I think getting listeners to paying for downloads won't be successfull without promoting the advantages the sonic advantages of vinyl and 96 KHZ/24 bit digital. And the latter takes bigger harddrives, faster internet connections and easier-to-use WAV/FLAC to MP3 conversion to hit it off. If...

TASCAM 388 now rewinding at a snail's pace! Any thoughts?

Yeah... most Ampex 456 from before they moved the factory setup to Alabama is fucked and got sticky shed syndrome really badly. Most late run 456 is perfectly fine and almost all Quantegy is perfectly fine. I've learned that from Beck and experienced IRL too. Try BASF/EMTEC/RMGI LPR35, they...

Working in both the analogue and digital realm?

If you wanna send the tracks to a DAW and mix there you can get a Tascam 16 track soundcard pretty cheap. I recorded one half of some friends album on a Fostex, bounced to DAW and then another guy mixed it. Another option is a tecnique commonly refered to as pinging: for instanse you got three...

    Fostex E16

Hey man! Welcome to HR. Yeah, I think either the midi sync box or the external Fostex syncroniser would do the trick, but I'm sure guys like Miroslav or Beck could be way more helpfull than me.

Micing the underside of a snare.

Personally I really like the sound of a crappy 58-copy through a cranked preamp for that position and then a decent mic on the top.

    New Psych-Pop (all-analog)

Wow, I really love "Treat It Like Your First". Is there any way to get a FLAC? Good to hear Mazzy Star coming up in this conversation. To my ears they sound like they're recorded really well on semi-pro analogue.

    Syncing two Fostex machines

Sorry to bring this thread back alive but I was only wondering what is the correct name for the cable that should go between the recorders? I don't have it and will be browsing Ebay for it.

    Pinch roller for Fostex G16?

Would you happen to know if I can use a Tascam pinch roller on our G16? Or perhaps the same roller as for the B or E 16? The roller is still fine but I want to have a spare roller as I don't wanna run the risk of unproductive weeks just because of a small rubber part that'll go bad sooner or later.

Solved Sampling Video VCR > Tascam 424 mIII

Assuming the VCR has phono sends just take the audio out from the VCR to the inputs on the 424. Never tried an 424 but maybe you'll need phono-jack converters but they're really cheap and not hard to find.

Recording engineers - whom would you write about?

Well, I know it's too late but the subject is really interesing. I'd write about Roy Hallee or Delia Derbyshire. If we are to include producers with an amazing ear for sonics I'd include Kevin Shields, Lee Hazlewood and Martin Hannett.

    Maxell UD5010-R

Thanks Beck! 1.5 mil thickness is the same as SM911 and 456 right? +3 - how nice, I've been looking for that for ages.

    Maxell UD5010-R

Any knowledge of these tapes? I've got access to used tape of this type. AFAIK Maxell don't have shedding issues but is it +3, +6 or +9 tapes? I'm trying to avoid +9 tapes as I like slight saturation and our machine don't handle 3M 996 too well - however no problems with SM900.
