    Proper spring reverb

Time for bringing this one back to life. We've got the PAIA spring reverb but an IC1 has gone missing. We're in a rush due to two EP's I've recorded that needs finishing very soon and PAIA's office is taking a break + plus shipping from the US is slow and cost money. This leads us to the...

    Tape splicing: noob questions

Hey there! Got a number of questions as for tape splicing. We're having space problems on the shelves and running out of empty reels. I need a splicing block, splicing tape and then what about the knife? Can a regular razor do the trick or would I need something more specialzied? There's...

What is at the core of your home studio?

For me it's a Fostex G16 tape recorder. Sounds great for a narrow track machine.

    Fostex R8 Not Recording

The shiny side should touch the heads. From what you wrote it sounds like it's the backcoating touching them. Also when you record the channels should be armed and going from flashing to lighting consistenly when pressing record and play. I may be preaching to the choir but just to be sure...

    Fostex A4 trouble

The slow stopping RW could be a break going bad but I don't know about the FF with any tape. Sounds really weird. I would take it to a tech if I was you. The A4 sounds great and has double the trackwidth of the other Fostex machines.

Experimenting with overbias: Observations on SM911 for 8 track

Pwew, then after all I didn't making that much of a mistake when I left some 468 with the second G16 that has arrived to our small studio. It was the only blank tape we had left that I knew wasn't sticky, I had noticed that we'd bought all the empty non-sticky tape he had and the guy assumed...

Spökraket have been recording a lot recently. This time we're trying shorter songs and less improvisations and for this single more shoegaze. It'll be released on 7" this Friday. There's a lot of gearflashing in the video which is right here: Spökraket: Distant light - YouTube The entire 7"...

    Power for Alesis Microverb III

Difficult is relative... I had to order it in one of the shops where I usually buy equipment. And they used to sell the Behringer Ultragain or whatever it was called - the only Behringer equipment that I tried and actually liked. It was so cool for getting a Jesus and Mary Chain-guitar sound...

Experimenting with overbias: Observations on SM911 for 8 track

Does this mean that 456 is close enough to SM468 so that you won't have to recalibrate between these tapes? If yes thats great news to me.

    Power for Alesis Microverb III

Thanks guys! From the outside it looks fine but just doesn't work. I've ordered a new one, it was pretty expensive but hopefully better quality than the crap that we used to use. They tend to break down every 6-12 months - we're using our gear a lot but take well care of it.

    Power for Alesis Microverb III

Hey guys! I got an Alesis Microverb III I really like using for hiding my lack of vocal skills but the power connection is breaking down all the time. It's a 9V but isn't of the same size as the typical guitar pedal. Would you happen to know what the official name of such a thing might be...

    Mixer:Pure Analog Path

Behringer is crap. I'll suggest you to take a look at a used Fostex 812 (12 channels) or 820 (20 channels). They sound more than decent, have direct outs on all channels, a reasonable amount of patching options and are pretty underrated and sometimes go for just above 200 dollars.

    Otari mtr 15.

Have you tried lifting the tension arm to the right hand side? Can you see the capstain spinning? Or at least hear the motor running? Also; what tape are you using? When did it last work? It can be sticky shed syndrome, especially if it's Ampex 456 or certain kinds of Scotch.

Fostex G16: no signal on track 2

Well, found them easily but couldnt get them out. I decided against it because it seemed quite a lot of strength was needed to move them and I was afraid to ruin the deck. However changing the cable on the output fixed the issue. Weird.

    TASCAM 388 Transport Problem

You're using Ampex 456 or 457? In case you do try a different tape.

    Long Live Analog!

I assume CLASP is nice for those searching for a tape sound but preferring the workflow of a DAW. I'm not amongst those. However I'd love if someone made it possible to use a DAW as a remote for a tape recorder for editing and muting tracks without any AD/DA conversions being made and staying...

Fostex G16: no signal on track 2

It didn't seem obvious how to get the cards out. But strange as it seems changing the output cable everything was fine. Perhaps I should do better troubleshooting before bothering you fellas.

Fostex G16: no signal on track 2

Now the same problem is occuring on another track. It's easy to locate the channel cards but how do I get them out?

I'm having fun producing and engineering Moroccan Roll. Some cool old hippies. This track is pretty similar to Hawkwind, just even more spacey. As always it's all analog apart from some of the reverb. It's recorded on SM900 as RMGI is out of 911. Om Namah | CableHell Studio
