    Overhead Choice for Upcoming Project

In an upcoming recording i'll be doing for a punk/hardcore-ish band, my mic choices for drums will be very limited when recording drums (because i will have to use the band's mics instead of my own). The mic collection i'll be using consists of a D112, SM57's and 58's, a Neumann TLM103 (the...

    Limiter in mixing

i don't know if it's the "proper" thing to do...but i also know that there are no rules when it comes to mixing, so very often i will use a limiter at the tops of my peaks just in case there are some strays anywhere along the way. and i'm talking about doing it on virtually every instrument. i...

Please Let Me Know What You Think

thanks a lot. the vocals would have been mixed louder, but this is the way the singer wanted them in the mix. so, i was going to go with whatever made him happy.

    is API overkill for me?

i should post a clip, or he should? and his question wasn't "should i learn how to place mics better?" and it wasn't "does my room suck?". his topic question was "is API overkill for me?" and i didn't say that it would fix his problem. i merely said that he wouldn't be disappointed with...

Please Let Me Know What You Think

Please let me know what you think about the song "Promises and Forget Me Nots." It's an acoustic song I recorded for the post-hardcore band The Silent Escape. I'd like for you to be as precise as possible, because I want to hear what I'm doing wrong and learn from my mistakes. I don't really...

    is API overkill for me?

My advice is to go ahead and buy the API. In all likelihood, you won't be disappointed at all with the quality of the pres. Not saying that I've used APIs or anything near that range. But, you know that you want them. And you know you'll never need to upgrade them. I'm not saying that you...

How to record a full band?

you'll probably get many different answers because there isn't one specific way to do this. But, here is my method: 1) Find the tempo/set up a click track 2) Have the guitarists(or maybe keyboardist) play the song through with timing being the main focus - I don't normally do bass because if...

Good mixer? and should i buy 1 or 2 monitors?

Whether or not you buy a mixer completely depends on your needs. If I were you, I would not buy it for the mere fact that I would never spend that much money on something if I didn't know what it does. As far as monitors go, if you don't know what the difference between buying one and two...

What Compression settings can i try, to get "Morning View Sessions" vocal leveling

I completely disagree. I think Brandon Boyd is an amazing singer. And from the live performances I've seen (which include all of their DVDs and twice from the front row) he displays excellent mic technique.

What Compression settings can i try, to get "Morning View Sessions" vocal leveling

it's probably based much more on good mic technique than it is on compression. he pulls back when he sings loudly and gets close when he whispers.

MAudio Tampa vs Maudio Octane vs Line 6 Toneport

i don't know what "open up" means. but, since i've had the tampa, it's been my favorite preamp to use on both vocals and bass DI.

    Snare Compression Problem

On the song that i am currently mixing, the drummer does a lot of fast snare fills. but, during the majority of the song, he's playing a constant/steady snare beat. I have the compressor's attack time set so that the transient comes through and the release time so that the gain reduction will...

MAudio Tampa vs Maudio Octane vs Line 6 Toneport

if the number of channels isn't a factor, i wouldn't really take the Octane into consideration at all. i don't have any experience with the Line 6 product. but, i love my tampa. and i definitely think it's great for Bass DI. and it has a great compressor.
