    Will I eventually need....

Based on the knowledge you seem to have on the subject, I'd stick with outsource mastering until you learn quite a bit more.

Please Help a 20-year-old Improve his Skills

Thank you all for these great comments and suggestions! I've been trying to better my recordings and these let me know what other people think I should keep and what I should change. I'm sure it would be next to impossible to please everybody. But, I feel like these are really helping me out.

Please Help a 20-year-old Improve his Skills

Thanks a lot guys! The more and more I listen closely, I have also come to believe that my low E is off. I can try compressing the chorus vocals a little more. I think I'm already hitting them at about 12db of gain reduction in the really loud spots. But, maybe a little more wouldn't hurt...

Please Help a 20-year-old Improve his Skills

David K, I do apologize. Trust me, I completely appreciate you taking the time to check the song out. I've listened many times and still don't hear the guitar as being out of tune. Maybe I have bad ears, or maybe I've just heard this recording WAY too many times and I'm starting to get used...

Please Help a 20-year-old Improve his Skills

My name's Nathaniel. I'm twenty. My sister-in-law sings. I wrote all of the music to this song. She wrote the lyrics and sang. I also did all of the engineering and mixing. Please critique my engineering and mixing down to the smallest detail. It's something that I really want to get better at...

    cut instead of boost

You want to get more high end without boosting. But, you don't want to cut any lows or mids. You're going to have a very hard time figuring this one out. Good Luck. :D

    Panning mutiple vocals?

all i'm trying to say is that there isn't a "correct" way to do this. mixes from people who pan everything the same way all the time tend to have mixes that sound very boring and sterile. if you want a 'textbook' method of doing things, my suggestion would be to double-track (re-record) the...

    Panning mutiple vocals?

the way you mentioned would be fine. anything would be fine. as long as it SOUNDS good, it IS good. if this method sounds awkward, then experiment and try something different

Do you actually Freeze / Bounce In Your Daw?

Sonar introduced the Freeze feature in version 4. And even before then, you could put the effects in the FX bin and they wouldn't alter the audio file. I use Sonar 4. There is no reason not to Freeze tracks in my opinion, it takes like a literal 3 extra seconds and it saves a lot of...

    Neko Case Discusses Autotune...

Personally, I don't think that using AutoTune to help better a singer with imperfect pitch is much (if any) different than using compression to help better a singer with poor dynamic control or using EQ to help a singer with imperfect tone. Sometimes, it's better to leave all aspects of the...

    Overhead Choice for Upcoming Project

Tampa, Envoice, DMP3, various low-end pres in this situation. But, once again, I'm not asking for advice on my snare sound. I'm asking about opinions for the overheads.

    Overhead Choice for Upcoming Project

i've heard good things about it on snare too. it would definitely be worth a try, because i'd like to brighten up this band's snare anyway. if there is too much bleed, i'll just go back to a 57. but, i was mainly just looking for opinions on overhead choices. i think, though, that i'll end up...

    Overhead Choice for Upcoming Project

I can't do m/s. The tlm103 can't do figure 8. Soutside Glen, what would cause you to choose the 57's as the overheads. I can tell from what you wrote that you think I should try to go with a very minimalistic approach. but, i don't understand why you would choose these over the others.
