    You know what is weird

In the eighties I had a Yamaha MT44 4 track with patch bay, I used guitar pedals for effects, I paid a fortune for that back then, ( that machine in today's dollars would be around $1800!) now I have a Behringer Xenyx 1832 board with 24 bit effects and 14 inputs going to a Akai EIE pro...

How often do you guys oil your fretboards, generally?

Depends on the type of rosewood and how much you play. I have some guitars I don't clean for years, others every year. I use beeswax/orange oil, if I do a new build then or take off the strings I at least clean it.

Electric guitar hum and buzz, how did the engineers using tape manage to avoid it?

A couple of issues, one is the use of a noise gate and the second is clean electricity, the last is look for a proper ground. I used a 4 track Yamaha for years way back when and that is what I focused on.

    VST plugins vs outboard gear

No, you just go through am mixer with outs to outboard equip and then to the computer, once conversion only, dont' know where you got the idea that it has to go back out of the computer and back in again.

Has my microphone gone bad? Maybe some other piece of equipment?

I had the same problem and it was the M Audio, no matter what I did I could get around it, got another audio interface and the problem was fixed, have heard others having the same trouble don't know if it was the drivers (I tried all I could find) or the unit itself.

My computer is now useless (Includes: excerpts my letter to Toshiba)

My first laptop was a Toshiba, I bought it in 1995 for $2500 for my company you could kill a moose with it. Do I need to upgrade from my sound card?

I looked at that but found a lot of negative replies: This unit might be decent for a recording setup, but as a general use soundcard, it is absolutely abysmal. Clicks, pops, distortion. It's absolutely infuriating. What's worse, Native Instruments seems to have nothing to say about it --...

Fast PC, have to keep buffer at 1024?

I had a M Audio Fast Track as well that had the same issues, I tried everything, finally I gave up and bought a Akai EIE Pro and everything was fine. Must be something screwy with the drivers, I was using XP at the time and both my Daws had the same issue.

Computers: Sometimes It's Best to Leave Well Enough Alone

I have been using PCs since they were invented and I agree to a point about not buying a PC with any new OS until the first Service Pack comes out. That was until Win 7 and I really think that whole idea is dead, I have computers running Win 8 and 7 and finally got my wife off her XP, the sad...

    Behringer Xenyx 302 Interface

It might not be an issue with the interface it could be an issue with your computer, restarting your computer to clear up something usually means something is out of whack, the interface shouldn't be the problem but you haven't mentioned anything about the computer you are using so I can't...

My monitor arrangement. Am I crazy?

I believe the main issue is to have the speakers accurately reproduce the sound, in other words no colouring you can get fairly accurate Hi Fi speakers all you need to do is look at the graph, if it can stay within a couple of db all the way through the sound spectrum you should be fine. I have...

Gallien-Krueger - 200W Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp

She went a head and bought it, she already has BXL 3000a Behringer (and she is very happy with it) for gigs, she also has a Washburn but it just wasn't loud enough, ( I think she is caught in the 3 bears problem) this was mainly for lugging around for practice etc. seems like a nice unit good...

So which instrument do you record first?

I do a scratch track first (drums, bass, guitar, vocals if it is a band) just drums if me alone, then bass, guitars etc.

Can you check if you need a power conditioner?

Simplest thing is to just try a different outlet on a different circuit, plus it is always good to have a battery backup unit it keeps things cleaner and if there is a problem you don't lose everything.

Firewire is dead, Long Live USB 3.0

Usb 3 I was really looking forward to USB 3 as well and jumped the gun and bought a USB 3 PCI card ($35) found it didn't work with my motherboard, bought another computer and it worked fine, just bought another computer and it had 2 USB 3 plugins. PC recording setup issues

Also sometimes it can just be an issue of what other programs do you have running on your PC? Even in the background they can cause issues. As well as the latest audio card drivers you should also make sure you have the latest drivers for everything, video card, wifi, any other programs.

what to do with MIDI? Help!

You need something to plug your midi cable from your synth or whatever you are going to use. You can get an adaptor relatively cheap so you plug your midi cable into the adapter. Or you can get the midi in and out built in your audio interface. I use the EIE Pro of Akai not that expensive and I...
