    Accurately Capturing Distorted/Chunky Guitar

My guitarist plays very much in the vein of Dimebag Darrell and Zakk Wylde. Lots of distortion, lots of chunk. I am having a hell of time capturing that sound while leaving sonic space for bass and kick drum. His low end drowns everything out, and then if I roll off too much during mixing, it...

    Motu vs. PreSonus

Hey Pipeline, I started with a PIV machine (3Ghz CPU) with only 2G of SDRAM and it worked with that, though not as many inputs at 96kHz and with a (much) higher sample buffer. Now I am running a Q6700 on an ASUS P5K-E mobo, 4G Corsair SDRAM, GeForce 8600GT 256M video, ADS Tech PYRO PCI 642...

    Looking to start...

Don't know, never used Cubase. I used SONAR years ago, quit for a few years, got back into recording with a Roland VS-2400, and then moved to PC based DAW with Reaper. Here's the trick, you can download Reaper and test it out, with full functionality, and decide for yourself what you think...

    Pipeline Audio!!!!

Oh ya, they're everywhere. I just took comfort in the fact that whenever someone would wash out of the submarine program, we sent them to the surface fleet. :D More then half! The boat had a 42' diameter and drafted 36'.

    Pipeline Audio!!!!

Middle of the Pacific eh? I haven't been in the middle of the Pacific in many years. You in the Navy, Coast Guard, or Merchant Marine or something? I was Navy, USS Ohio. One of them funny boats that went to sea and sank intentionally. :D -Wes

    Motu vs. PreSonus

I have been running a FireStudio 2626 with a DigiMax FS for a while now and it works great with Reaper. No compatibility issues, no drops outs. I did have to build a Q6700 based computer to handle 16 inputs at 96kHz, but everything works, and sounds, great.

    Looking to start...

If you're concerned with number of inputs, I'd look into something that uses Firewire and not USB. Firewire is designed for this sort of thing as it has a much higher, continuous, throughput. I use a PreSonus FireStudio 2626 with a DigiMax FS hooked to it for 16 mic pre's at 96kHz/24 bit and...

    Help with buying new heads

Evans can take a bit longer to break in, but they last longer then any Remo I ever had. I usually use EC2 Clear Batter and Genera Glass Reso's, but I am thinking of going back to the old G2/G1 for my next recording project. Last time I experimented with Hydraulics on top and G2's on bottom...

    Maple fretboard vs. rosewood?

I'm not the great of a guitarist to begin with, mostly a drummer now, but I never noticed a huge difference in feel but I do like maple myself. I also think it's more aesthetically pleasing and when you play like I do, looks count. :D -Wes

    8 Channel ADAT Pre-amp for under $500?

Sweetwater has a DigiMax FS Demo for $550 right now (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DigiMaxFSd1/). I have a DigiMax FS hooked up to my FireStudio 2626 and I have zero problems with them. As far as the FireStudio Project, I know with the FireStudio 2626 and the Project they were...

Rip Da SysTeM - DIY Patchcords

Just what I was looking for. Awesome info. Oddly enough, I came here this morning to ask about DIY patch/guitar cables and what not. I have been checking out places to pick up cable/connectors, and so far www.best-tronics.com seems to be the most promising. Do you have any places that you...

What order do you record instruments?

I think most DAW software suites have some sort of temp mapping function where you can build in time changes, I know Reaper does.

    Introducing myself

There's a guy on there, Frank Griffith, who has a pretty handy guide he's written for the VS-2480. He hands it out for free if you run into him. Between him and Lakestone Karl, you can pretty much have every VS question you can come up with answered! -Wes

Recording drums | On a rack or on stands?

I have been using a drum rack for as long as I can remember. With a 7-piece kit and 10 cymbals it just makes it quicker and easier for set up and tear down at shows. Should I be worried about recording with it though? Would the isolation provided by individual cymbal (or even tom) stands make...
