    Monitor Polarity

I'd probably make a short 1/4" female to 1/4" male jumper with the polarity reversed so it could be easily added and removed. Or perhaps a box-mounted or just shrink-wrap-covered 1/4" chassis-mount jack to a male 1/4" to avoid the not-so-reliable 1/4" female jacks.

    Guitar Cables

+1 on Switchcraft jacks. I've had too many cheap 1/4" and female XLR jacks fail - all replaced successfully, i.e. only once, with Switchcraft. Probably other brands that work fine, too. Neutrik look nice, but the 1/4" jacks I've been offered have really wide bodies that are probably fine, but I...

    latency issues and vst plug-ins

Nice article. Thanks for posting. I never knew this: (from the article) Though, qualified later by Have people found this 20ms limit to be generally true? At the very least, the formula makes me think I should revisit my buffer setting. I'd set it originally to work with 96KHz (1024...

Bass Recording Preference: DI or Mic/Amp?

Basically, the same thing has worked very well for me, too. Though I have been experimenting with recording both mic and DI (when I can make that much noise), and I find the mic'd amp accentuates the right mid-range chunk to cut through without doing much EQ'ing or compressing. Also had a...

    Music production on Linux

I've actually recorded at a studio that used a software package developed for linux. Sounded great. A lot of people did a lot of work to make it so easy to record on PCs and Macs, so why scoff at people making that same effort to bring Linux into the field?

    Music production on Linux

Actually, I've turned several older PCs that choke on newer versions of Windows into Linux boxes that can run well and be very useful. I've no problem with open-source drivers and contributions. I've ben constantly amazed by how everytime I have to look for a driver or app, that someone has...

    Sonar and Akoustik piano troubles

Two long shots: Multi-Processor (if yours is a dual-proc): Try setting the processor affintity of Sonar to a single processor after running it. Not sure in Vista, but in XP you can do it through the Task Manager -> Processes tab -> right-click on the process, sonar.exe -> choose Set Affinity ->...

Windows XP SP3 - Report Issues here!

Do you have 2GB or more RAM? There may be a fix if you do. I had the same problem (started only a couple weeks ago), where standby wouldn't happen by itself and hibernation was broken...

Theatrical Stage Micing - What's the best method?

Is there a band? Will it be back stage, or off to one side, in a pit, or will it be across the front between the stage and the front row? Sounds like the band won't be mic'd if there is one, though. If there is a band up front and they are not mic'd, then you would probably benefit from from...

    Analog Mixer - Please Help

Glad to help. There's a $400 16 channel with sweepable mids on the Philadelphia Craigslist that's been driving me crazy. I only just bought mine recently, and I don't have room for 2 let alone the 16 anyway, but... I have the manual for the 200B (available on Souncraft's web site) and the...

Warning: Backup Plugin Presets Before Sonar Upgrade

I recently upgraded from Sonar 4 to 7. Everything went smoothly except that a week or so later I found that my saved plugin presets had been erased. I'd built up a collection over several years that served as quick settings, or at least good starting points. Fortunately I was able to find a...

    Analog Mixer - Please Help

The older Mackie 1202-VLZs are solid and produce quite decent results. I think all but the oldest 1202s, including pre-VLZ have the Alt 3-4 buss. I looked on eBay for a while for exactly what you are describing. I kept getting outbid on the Mackies and then I decided to get a Mixer with a...

    tascam portastudio 424 help!

Good thought. Made me wonder: is the problem only on playback of recorded material, or is it what you are monitoring through the headphones or the line outs also? That would help distinguish between the tape head and the mixer sections.

    What makes a good bridge?

"From Me to You" just came up on iTunes and I realized the last chord of the bridge is probably a G7 alt, not a G b13.

    tascam portastudio 424 help!

Those inputs are fairly high gain. Perhaps the line-level output of your amp is too hot. Try plugging your guitar directly into the Tascam, and also the mic, and see if you can get a good sound. I used to play bass and guitar directly into my 424. I also used a 57 mic with just a hi-Z/low-Z...

    What makes a good bridge?

Yes, thanks. Yeah, I like the change back into the verse that happens before you realize it, too. The other thing I like is that it slides down a whole step to start the bridge, and then at the end, again slides down a whole step to get back into the verse. Like a Escher staircase. In the...

    Weird mixer problem

Is the muddy sound on every input channel? Have you tried the Sub out instead on the main? Have you tried the channels' direct outs alone (no mains or aux connections)? I would try this: Connect a male to male TRS cable to the aux out and another one to the your monitor amp. With your monitor...

    Ground lift adapters

Two more things: A tip I figured out with my old Ampeg tube amps for checking the polarity without a tester, especially if you have a polarity switch and a 2-pronged power cord. This is to prevent electrical shocks when touching other equipment. Plug a patch cable into the amp leaving the...

    Ground lift adapters

Also, that little U-shaped tab at the base of the 'ground-lift' adapters is actually to make the ground connection. Screwing the tab under the receptacle cover plate screw between the outlets, might actually get you a real ground. This depends on two major things: -That there is a ground wire...
