yes you can record both XLR's simultaneously. just arm both tracks 1 and 2. can't help you with the drum mic question though. But if your going to do what I think your going to do, you should SUBMIX drums, not just mic a set of drums with two mics.

Wouldn't it be bad to mix with monitors that have a subwoofer attached? It seems like you might pull the low end back a little further than you would normally because the monitors are so generous with it. Just guessing.

you guy's dont use the mic simulators built-in to the MR-8 when using your condenser mics and preamps right? I couldn't imagine why you would. just curious.

The actual recordings are saved in WAV file format. All the data of each song is in stored in ADL (Audio Decision List) files. Here's a white paper on ADL files (check out section 6). http://www.aes.org/standards/b_pub/aes31-3-1999.pdf

so, with powered monitors, the amplifier is on the actual monitors rather than having amped signal(?). where as unpowered depend on an already amped signal?
