I'm personally not a big fan of the 603 on acoustic, as it is more than a touch too harsh, IMO. But I love the Oktavas, and the CAD M179 is good as well. Here's a song I recorded where the acoustic guitar was recorded with a pair of MC012s.

Whoever told you this is crazy. So basically, they're telling you that the Joe Meek, a mic pre, is going to be better at guitars and the Roland, a guitar processor, is going to be a better mic pre? That just defies common sense.
You're considering dropping several hundred on a guitar processor...
I'd say the pres in your Roland are probably as good as the DBX pre. Do a search on the DBX mini-pre, and you'll find that that's pretty much the consensus.
If you're not willing to a least get the VTB-1 or DMP3, I'd say it's not worth getting an outboard pre at all, that you should just stick...
When it comes to flexibility, clean is always better than colored. You can manipulate a clean sound into anything you want, but with a colored sound, you're stuck with the color to some extent.
I think you're on the right track with your AT4040/VTB1 combo. I'd probably get a DMP3 instead of a...
I agree. The only thing I like a whole lot better on bass DI better is when I had my Groove Tubes Brick.
Here's a blog post where I discuss the ART pre as a Bass DI:

I haven't heard much good about the HHB.
If you're looking to spend a little bit more, and you wouldn't mind a compressor and EQ, I think the JoeMeek ThreeQ is a good bargain. Good pre, colorful compressor (good for some things, but not for others) and a good EQ. IMO, it's one of the best...
Changing the tube won't make a huge difference with those units.
BELIEVE ME, just avoid the ART for your first pre. I have the ART, and I really like it... for certain things, but I would never lay track after track after track with it. The DMP3 is a much better pre.
I rarely use my windscreen on mine. I agree with Big Kenny. Get the SM7 and buy a Stedman. I think the windscreen makes a lot more sense in a broadcast environment, rather than a studio.
In your price range, the DMP3 and VTB-1 is the only thing you should be looking at. They're both very clean and nice. Believe me, you don't want the "warmth" of the ART toob pres on every single track. They're nice for an effect every once in a while, or as a bass DI, but not as your primary...
