    $250

I'd get a set of Oktava MC012s offa Ebay. Either that or up your budget to $300 and get the Studio Project C4s

    which budget mic?

Because the Rode mic doesn't necessarily have better quality. Why ask a question with questionable assumptions? :p

post your mp3 using a condenser mic

Go to the MP3 forum. Most of the stuff recorded there is probably with budget condensors.

    preamp comparison

With your current equipment and $2000, I'd get a Soundelux U195, an SM7, and an RNP.

Preamp Advice: SCA n72 vs. Sebatron vs. ISA 428 vs. Sytek

But then again, you haven't used the N72s, Steve. :) Or am I wrong about that?

    DMP3 level question

The meters on the DMP3 are useless, IMO. I don't look at them for anything.

Preamp Advice: SCA n72 vs. Sebatron vs. ISA 428 vs. Sytek

I like my N72s quite a bit, but I almost like their cheaper, cleaner, uncolored C84s better. I think for rock, the N72s are the logical choice, though.

i want that smooth vintage crooner feel

I wrote that review. If you want to hear the clips that I used to write the review, check them out here. Maybe you'll come to a different conclustion than I did.

DMP3 / RNP inches or miles?

IMO, yes. If you're recording a whisper-quiet vocalist, you may have a little bit of a problem with the preamp noise.

DMP3 / RNP inches or miles?

IMO, the RNP is a lot more musical than the DMP3, which can be a touch unforgiving and a little harsh in the highs. The RNP is extremely clean and musical, especially for the price. I wish I still had mine. Also, the DI on the RNP versus the DMP3 is not even a contest. The RNP DI is one of my...

Whose ass did I kiss? Certainly not lovers of the highly overrated SM57.

Full-normalling VS. half-normalling the mic lines in a patch bay.

4 on this thread, 1 on the GS thread are not comfortable with running phantom through the patchbay. Your approach is fine, but you shouldn't pretend that there's no disagreement here, and that it's a completely settled issue.

Full-normalling VS. half-normalling the mic lines in a patch bay.

I see what you're saying, but lots of folks that are responding, both on this thread and on the gearslutz thread, are saying they don't feel comfortable running phantom through any but an XLR patchbay. I guess I was just under the impression that this was a no-no, but apparantly it depends on...

Full-normalling VS. half-normalling the mic lines in a patch bay.

I started this thread over at gearslutz for more conversations about phantom through a patch bay: http://gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php3?p=503636&posted=1 I'm learning something every day. I thought that mics and patch bays never mixed. It appears that answer is more complicated than that.

Full-normalling VS. half-normalling the mic lines in a patch bay.

Every pro facility I've ever seen has mic connectors in the wall that go to the preamps. I really want to do that one of these days, rather than having to constantly reach behind my rack in feats of acrobatic skill.

You're running your mics through a patch bay?
