    Muttley, Advice if You Please

Sounds good, Mutt. :) Last night I got out my pocketknife and had a scrape at the sides of the frets. They're loaded with poly. When I come due for a string change I'm going to get the frets as clean as possible. Maybe that will help a little.

    Muttley, Advice if You Please

No offense taken, Mutt. In fact, this is the first guitar I have ever owned with a maple fretboard. All the others have either rosewood or (the Martin) ebony boards. But I've played a few in the past and have never noticed this. Maybe it's because I didn't spend much time on them, or maybe...

    Muttley, Advice if You Please

Mutt, there is no significant wear on the fretboard finish. I use Dean Markely "vintage" nickel steel strings, 10-46 regular gauge, and keep fresh sets on. This has been an issue since I purchased the guitar new. I really believe that the drag is a product of the high gloss on the fretboard...

    Muttley, Advice if You Please

Oh, I had the finish flaking off the frets for a couple of weeks after buying this Tele. But that's all gone and I believe it's the gloss finish on top of the maple fretboard that's causing the drag.

No, this one has a high-gloss finish all over, including on the fingerboard. Some of it really needs to be knocked back I think, or at least deglossed. There is not a big amount play time on this instrument but even so, as tough as this finish on the fretboard seems to be there are few signs of...

    Muttley, Advice if You Please

Mutt, I have a Fender Telecaster that's giving me a couple of problems. It's an American Deluxe Ash Tele, fairly new (2007 I think). First: The high E string keeps popping out of the nut, because the slot is very shallow. Short of having a new nut cut, do you think installing a string tee...

Good advice. Or Taylor could recommend Taylor-authorized luthiers in your area.

Bass heavy/boomy Acoustic Guitar recordings. Help

Drew, you drive a hard bargain, but I guess I'll have to live with what I have. :D

    Crying...Please help ;(

You may have missed what Muttley said. You'd best get that crack repaired ASAP or it could be much more difficult to repair. You also might want to find an independent shop, as GC would typically farm out the job to someone anyway, and take a cut.

Bass heavy/boomy Acoustic Guitar recordings. Help

I have a vintage Martin D-28 (1967) that is a beautiful-sounding instrument to the ear, and complete hell to record. Its bottom end is just too prominent for recording. I have tried every micing technique I can find, to no avail, and end up EQing all the low end out of it. I'm convinced that...

Do you use amp modeling instead of amp?

I use a Pod XT Live occasionally for recording. A few of the amp models are very nice; some are not so convincing. Most of my recording is through tube amps, though. As we've said over and over on this forum, a modeler is just a tool. If it gets you where you want to go, fine.

My guess: Trial positioning, not even screwed into the wall, maybe suspended on a picture hanger or with double-sided tape.

Midi Program for Lead Guitar - ala Addictive Drums?

Believe me, I completely understand how life intrudes, and I'm not gonna beat up on you. Consider this, though. The reason you can get good results out of Addictive Drums is that you are a drummer, and you understand what drums are supposed to sound like. You recognize what is possible and what...

Midi Program for Lead Guitar - ala Addictive Drums?

[...and the apocalypse begins.] I know this isn't what you want to hear, but if you consider yourself a strong rhythm guitarist, I'd suggest you use the situation as an opportunity to better your craft. If, as you say, you are "looking to expand," you should be expanding your abilities rather...

    Budget Les Pauls

I'm of two minds about the whole high-end/low-end guitar model thing. Fender has three grades of Strats, right? - MIA, MIM, and Squier, and they're all called Stratocasters. Same with Teles. Gibson has three grades - Custom Shop, USA, and Epi. (Here's a question: is a USA LP any less of a LP...
