I recently purchased a tape echo unit, and am going to be splicing my own tape loops for it. I figure, given the nature of this sort of device, that my best bet would be to use the thickest tape possible in order to stand up to the rigours of use. That being, the same little loop gets used over...
Yeah, the 644 is a 4 track machine. But if you don't actually need 8 tracks, you should get a greater fidelity from a 4 track due to the larger track width.
Hmm... didn't D12s originally have the mic lead hard-wired to the mic?
Me thinks this could well be an aftermarket conversion to add an XLR jack. Can you see a hole somewhere around the underside of the grill where a mic cable could have originally gone in?
A properly tensioned plate will probably yield better results than the loosely hanging plate design you have in mind (check out the TapeOp article earlier in this thread).
Nice! ;)
It's amazing, the fit for six rack units is so spot-on perfect, the designer at Ikea who was responsible for creating this thing must have been a musician/audio-gear-buff with his own little agenda. :p
I don't think tape hiss would be a good indicator as it would most likely be the hiss from the noise floor of the cassette medium, rather than a recorded artefact from the source. As Tim mentioned, if it was preamp hiss which was recorded along with the tape's music, it may be useful, but I have...
Sorry about the late follow up to this thread; unfortunately have had some unexpected time away from this forum...

The purpose of the rails is to build one of those Ikea "Rast" rack units (it's a bedside table Ikea sells for under $20 that fits six rack units...

Think of them as instruments, forming part of the instrument "tonal" setup which is to subsequently be recorded via the recording signal chain. ie: Use them not in the...
Hi folks,
Does anyone know of a cheap source for rack rails in Australia? Preferably, I'm after the type that doesn't require cage nuts (screw goes straight into rack rail) and in 6U lengths, but I'm pretty flexible. Basically, the same thing as THESE, but located in Australia.
If anyone knows a...
Wow, that ikea "Rast" rack unit conversion is awesome, thanks for posting that! Looks like I'm gonna be making a trip to my favourite Swedish furniture store soon!
As for a cheap rack to mount your headphone amp, or any other project for that matter: Search ebay for old, rackmount telephone...
Hi, thanks for the reply...
Yeah, I've removed the three tiny screws to get the top half of the basket off. The problem is, how do I remove the element to get at the bottom half of the basket? Does it just pull out?
Beyer M69 - Some questions...
Ok, I just picked up four used Beyer Dynamic M69 mics for a grand total of about $200 Australian (about $175ish US)...
Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone knows the best way to dismantle one of these? I'd like to "un-dent" some of the windscreens and also make sure...
