Is this worth paying extra for?

Also look for deals that just present themselves. I was in Guitar Center one day and found a bunch of B.L.U.E. Kiwi quad cables in a box of used junky cables that had been used for the "Guitarmageddon" competition. MSRP=$100 (ooh baby- not today) Real retail=$60 (not today either) I bought all 6...

Does the Behringer XM8500 require a preamp?

One further note- The XM8500 is not a bad dynamic mic. I've got $12,000 or so sunk into mics, and I use the XM8500 for some things, some of the time. That says a lot for a $25 mic. For certain applications, a cheap mic is what you need. It is pretty good on snare drum, guitar amplifiers, and for...

Does the Behringer XM8500 require a preamp?

The essential answer is- *all* microphones need a preamp. And if you want it to plug into a computer, you need an analog to digital converter. A USB mic is just a mic with a built in preamp and a built in A-D converter. Figure this- World-class preamps are over $1000 per channel. Top shelf A-D...

Need help finding a microphone for casting

Yup- "plug and play". That means the mic has an analog to digital (A-D) converter and a microphone preamplifier (preamp) built in. Let's see- top quality A-D converters are a couple of grand. World-class preamps are $1000-$5000 per channel (or more in some cases). The best main vocal mics in the...

    Home Recording an Album

I know this is *home* recording.com but.... For what you want to do, home recording is the slowest, most expensive, and most difficult way to do it. It is sometimes the most rewarding way as well. You aren't going to get the star-making results you want in an untreated room with one cheap stage...

Cabs=electric guitar cabinets. Stick it on an amplifier. It rocks.

    Akg c2000b vs t.bone stc800 vs at2035

I'm a big fan of the C2000B. I think you have chosen well. Try it on cabs. It is a *very* versatile little sucker. Now that you have one, get another. The pair is great for overheads and stereo recording.

    pro tools digi002 query

Sorry, I'm no geek, but I own an 002, and your computer specs are marginal at best. The question is- did it work before, and now it doesn't, or has it done that since you hooked it up? If the former, deal with Digi tech support. If the latter- the same, but you may be due for a computer upgrade...

Can You Tell What Microphone Is This?

Regarding the second mic, insufficient data, dude. It looks like a Neumann U47 (even more expensive than the other one) Problem is, it's one of the most copied/cloned mics in the world. The shape and color of the housing rules out a lot of stuff, but is far from conclusive.

    Fifty dollar mics

Answer- supply and demand. Companies don't make something because it's good. They make it because it sells. The D770 and D690 are among my go-to cheap dynamics. I use them anywhere most folks would use an SM57/58. D770 is a don't-leave-home-without-it mic. And as far as the XM8500 goes, here's...

    Fifty dollar mics

It's amazing, actually. I was doing a mic and preamp shootout as a project, and I wanted a mic that really sucked. I figured a $20 Behringer ought to meet that standard. The shocking part is- how much it *didn't* suck. It sounds like an AKG mic, such as a D770, which for $20 (now up to $25, I...

    Help on Vocal Mic

Start with "what's the budget?". That usually rules out lots of candidates. And of course, the appropriate disclaimers- YMMV, etc. Vocal mics, more than any other mics, are like shoes. They either fit or they don't. What you are hoping, as we all always do, is that the shoe that fits will be a...

That's the brass insert in the threads to fit a European stand. Take a dime, remove the brass insert, and it will fit a standard American mic stand thread.

1 expensive overhead vs 2 cheap overheads

Frankly, the C-4's will work just fine, and have many other applications. I have used them often when much more expensive mics were available.

Do you see any shortcommings in these mics?

It sucks, but what you say is essentially true. Will data sheets tell you the difference between a good band and a bad one? There is no technical description of "sounds good". OK- noise is bad, in general, but it matters more on some sources than others. Flat response is not a feature of a main...

    Cheap live vocals microphone?

If I had known you were on the other side of the pond, I might have recommended a used Sennheiser e835 or AKG D5. What bouldersoundguy said above is true. Some mics take a higher level of skill to use properly. Some mics are easier on the vocalist but harder on the sound guy. I would say that as...
