    wanted:equally noisy songs

Yes, thanks, I'll just go and unnormalise the tracks I've normalised. I thought the loud ones still sounded louder.

that song about heroin messed about with

Now I know what 'Dangerous Friend' is about (thanks folks) I've added some trippy guitar overdubs. I can always take them away again (till I rerecord on the smart card tomorrow). Any views? www.nowhereradio.com/jonlenin/singles

    wanted:equally noisy songs

Speak for yourself, Blackpool! Funny, but when I first arrived in Wales I was puzzled for years by graffitti on a bridge saying WALES ARE PUBLIC. One day it dawned on me: WALES A REPUBLIC. Unfortunately still untrue. Is anyone going to answer my last question?

anyone tell me what this song's about?

I did smoke dope and drink three pints every night for seventeen years. Could it be that? I also had a friend with a big motorbike who made me get one as well. That was twenty-seven years ago, mind.

anyone tell me what this song's about?

You reckon? I've never knowingly taken heroin or coke. The guitar is a Tanglewood Earth 200 through a Shure Beta 58A into a Fostex MR8, double-tracked three times. I think maybe the electric should have been louder.

anyone tell me what this song's about?

Just uploaded a song called 'Dangerous Friend' (www.nowhereradio.com/jonlenin/singles) - not sure exactly what it's about, but it always seems to get a reaction live. ps I see I'm a junior member now - is that like reaching e-puberty? Do you get a party?

calling all enemies of Ronald McDonald

Cardiff Social Forum is planning to compile a CD of songs relating (in any way, including quite remote ways) to the anti-globalisation movement, by unsigned artists from a variety of countries. Any offers? Or ideas of where else I might ask?

    rogue tambourine destroys career

Sure, Hevy, I'd love you to do my songs, long as you don't keep the royalties. Let me know how it goes down. Funny both comments so far say take it up - I always did it in A, not G, but I thought my voice was better in a lower range, and I wanted to sing that high note at the end, and top G is...

    rogue tambourine destroys career

Just uploaded a new song to www.nowhereradio.com/jonlenin/singles (Crown of Laurel). I'm guessing people might find the tambourine a bit OTT, but has the rest anything to offer?

a miserable navel-gazing song about lost love

Reviews welcome on 'Crown Of Laurel', just uploaded onto www.nowhereradio.com/jonlenin/singles.

    Love Songs...

It's the quality of the song that counts. There are probably a thousand songs about love fading, but is 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' just a cliche? Or 'Killing Me Softly' (falling for someone), 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' (new love)? They're only boring for people who can't access...

    turd on the tracks

Thanks for comments. I never realised LL had a chorus. Following this song's rapturous reception, I've now deleted it. There's a new one up called Crown Of Laurel, so comments welcome on that as well. (www.nowhereradio/jonlenin/singles).

    Favorite lyricists and why.

Actually someone did mention Billy Joel, a couple of pages back. It leapt out at me because he wrote that horrendous song about life, the universe and everything which ends with the line "JFK, blown away, what more do I have to say?" Maybe we could start a new thread called 'Pretentious, moi?'...

    wanted:equally noisy songs

Thanks, Dexter - that works great. I thought converting to mp3s was supposed to degrade tracks, but I can't tell any difference. Is there something wrong with my ears?

    wanted:equally noisy songs

Does anyone have any tips as to how to get the volumes of different songs at the same level when putting several tracks on a CD? nb I've got an MR8, n-track (which I still haven't worked out) and a Nero burning rom.

For all you old farts (born before 1967)

Also born 54. Of course, on this side of the pond equipment hasn't changed at all. We still use a Marshall stack and a Baldwin Black Bison bass (although I did have a Farfisa organ in 71 and I haven't seen one of them for a while). Anyone want to hear about the time I stood next to Dylan...

    songwriting woes

I agree your lyrics have potential, but you do say you want to use vivid imagery and storytelling, and I'd advise you to do exactly that. Obviously there's no rules about lyrics, but I think generally the more specific you are, the better. That's the strength of (say) Dylan up to the 'Desire'...
