Any Tricks for reducing vocals already mixed in.

I have a bunch of stereo mixdowns of 4track stuff. The orginal 4 trk tapes are long gone. The mixes are o.k. except the vocals are too loud. I've tried cutting some select frequencies on a 31 band EQ but it tends to make the background music sound funny. Are there any good tricks for this?

I'm going to wack my mixer with a bat

Getting Good Tight Bass guitar sounds?

DI seems to work o.k. for some stuff, but it's hard to make it sound very gutsy. I had luck recently recording bass through a guitar amp. A Fender blues DeVille to be specific. Add a touch of gain for a nice ballsy sound.

Anyone know where to find simple comparisons of the various multi-track software?

I posted this topic a few days ago and it just disapeared! I wonder what happened to it. Anyways, like I said I'm looking for reviews or simple comparisons between multi-track software. I've downloaded the demos for a bunch. Some don't work. Some seem too midi or multimedia oriented. I just...

    Old wiring= 60 cycle hum= I go nuts

Thanks for the advice Sonusman but I think I may have misused the term "60 cycle hum". The buzz I'm getting through my monitors comes and goes and is relatively minor. Also, It doesn't show up in the recordings so might be a power amp thing. It's really the hum from the guitars and bass...

    Old wiring= 60 cycle hum= I go nuts

I rent, so I can't really do much to change the wiring. There are no dimmer switches in our apartment. It occurs to me that the vacant store below might have flourescent lighting. They are very slowly turning it into a coffee shop and I think they sometimes leave it on. Nope. I just checked...

    Old wiring= 60 cycle hum= I go nuts

I've been using my apartment as a studio. I'm lucky enough to live above a vacant store. Plus my roomates are either in my band or very tolerant. Anyways, it's working out beatifully except for horrendous hum. Mostly from the guitars & bass but sometimes it comes through the monitors too. Yes...

Buy now, pay later or, buy later, pay now?

Sorry for posing such a vague question but what do y'all think about the near future of computer recording? I guess what I'm asking is, as someone who has a servicable 8trk cassette setup, but is very tempted to blow a wad of cash on an 8 I/O soundcard, would I better off waiting a year or...

    So mackie sucks, what doesn't?

The Spirit Folio FX8 looks like pretty much the same thing as the Mackie CFX. The MSRP is $1 more. Plus, the fx are Lexicon which I've heard is usually a good sign. There may be differences. I haven't checked details or actually seen either of these boards in person.

Those #$%& worthless piece o' @#$! patch cables.

I've recently spotted "American Cable Company" cables that come in 1' and 6' lengths, and 7 colors. At the very least, they have to be more reliable than hosas or peaveys. $4.49 apeice from a catalog. Fender makes some in 6 different clear colors, but are $2 per cable more. Who knows if they're...

    So mackie sucks, what doesn't?

I don't know why Mr. sonusman put up the link to that German site (probably the first one he found), but at Full compass e.g., the spirit LX7 16x4, which has a has a MSRP of $1600, sells for $1121. I think Sonusman was comparing two boards w/similar features. The cfx look like a totally...

    So mackie sucks, what doesn't?

What I didn't quite get across in my original post was that if no one had ever told me my mackie board sounds like shit, I would never have thought twice about it. It is a supremely practical board. I use almost every feature on it, and want for little more (maybe individual channel meters but...

Guided By Voices - Love em or Hate em?

Some of my greatest influences like GBV and Jack Logan have recorded some pretty lo-fi shit. My own favorite recordings I've been part of all seem to be hastily recorded four track or even boom box stuff. I don't think this is a coincedence. I think there is an immediacy or even a haunting...

    So mackie sucks, what doesn't?

I keep hearing about how "harsh" or "brittle" or whatever Mackie boards are and I guess I'm willing to believe it. But is there a similarly priced(to the 1604), compact board that does have nice warm pre-amps? This would be important for those like me, who are switching from tape to PC recording...

Any tips on dealing with proximity hum?

Yeah, I heard about the monitor thing so I checked. It didn't seem to make a diference. We weren't all that close to it when we recorded anyway. The neon signs are in the corner grocery next door and although the building almost touches mine, the signs are a good fifty+ feet away. The guitar was...

Does a Multi-channel "output only" PC card exist?

Wow! This string or whatever it's called should be requiered reading for poeple thinking about getting into PC based recording. I already use my PC to record my stereo masters but was thinking of getting an 8 In/8 Out card and some multi-track software. Thing is, I never planned on using this...

Any tips on dealing with proximity hum?

The buzz that doesn't show up until you turn the guitar's volume knob up and varies by which direction you're facing. It's noticably worse with single coil pickups (I guess that's they call 'em humbuckers) I have to gate the shit out of my guitars esp. the rick bass. I hate that. There's got to...

    best distortion pedal?

I use an old RAT and a Sovtek Big Muff for two totally different sounds. Sometimes I use both together. Ouch! Gotta have a good amp to start with, though. WARNING! My bandmate has a newer RAT and it doesn't sound anywhere near as nice as mine. I don't know why.

Those #$%& worthless piece o' @#$! patch cables.

I considered making my own cables but I think I need to find some reliable color coded ones. The nightmare of spaghettied identical looking patch cables would be too much. I know I could put tape on the ends but it wouldn't be the same as being able to visually trace the cable. Maybe I'm just lazy.
