I really want to capture some type of 60s Jefferson Airplane sound, where it sounds simple and old-school, but still good. I mean, how did they do it - where there's drums panned all the way to one side and guitars on the left, and everythings clangy and kind of distorted, but it still sounds...

.... thanks for the comments! yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the yamaha TMX, but I used it in a pinch since that's all I had laying around at this time. I'm looking forward to being able to work on the next tune with bulls hit that has real drums now that my home computer is back up and running...

... great points. I notice I'm most guilty of listening to my pre-mixes like 50 times and after awhile everything sounds fine. Until I shelf it and listen to it several months down the road.

... thanks guys. I'm leaning toward the limiting idea. I don't mind compression and EQ, but with sub-par equipment, my untrained ear, and the fact that the mix is probably a little screwy anyway...

what's the consensus on mastering using an mr-8: worth it, or basically useless to try and push a button to magically master a mix?

in general, if I'm using programs like cool edit pro and audacity (what I consider cheapy/old/beginner) - should I not even attempt to master my recordings? I've tried in the past, and I was somewhat pleased, but I'm thinking with cheap/free/old programs it's probably just going to actually...

... I like the bass sound so much, I'm gonna use it as the standard for my song lacking a good bass tone that I need to re-record. Not my style of vocals, but the mix sounds good, and the guitars really stand out nice.

the drums are kinda set. i was kind of shooting for the effect of them. As for the bass....If only like 1 person said something about the bass, I'd leave it, but the overwhelming response here and elsewhere is FIX THE BASS. it's not something I can really pick out, but I'm not a bassist, so...

... thanks for the review! yeah, for some reason I got really gun shy this time with the bass and dropped the bass frequency on the mixer. you see, when I used to record with my computer, the bass would come out so strong that I'm still compensating for that affect with my mr-8. gotta stop...

I'm having fun with my MR-8, but more from the standpoint of "I like that it makes me have to bounce tracks." I mean, it's a cool unit, but you have to keep mixing down and bouncing and copying and pasting in order to get more tracks freed up and be able to control the mix. But I like that...

yes I totally hear you. I think there's a musical principal that states if you hear it on TV or radio, it's ok, but on homerecording.com or other DIY music site, you can't have drums that sound even remotely programmed unless it's rap. I have spent hours programming only to have someone say...
