    Snare recording question

You need to get the levels good enough for the beats and then sweep louder. One thing drummers need to always be aware of in a recording situation is their dynamics. You need to learn to control your dynamics yourself, without compressors, before you try to start using the outboard gear that...

Tips to get a vintage sound on a mix

I agree that composition/arrangement DO play a huge part in the vintage sound. I know because the way I compose and arrange is in the 60's style. But at the end of the day, I think what people are generally refering to regarding the "vintage" is the warmth of tape, and/or, tape distortion. You...

Tips to get a vintage sound on a mix

Well to get that vintage sound, you should use vintage gear. By that I mean a tape machine and an old analog board. But thats getting ahead of ourselves. Go in to your "live" room, whatever that may be. Pick a reference point in the room and mark it with tape. Then set up your drum kit in...

How to save money building a studio without compromising sound quality.

Id just like to say that my current studio budget (and all the gear im getting is NOT budget gear, its high-end studio standard stuff) is around 6k. My tax return and what I save up pretty much covers it. I use an 8-track Tascam M30, going to a Tascam 80-8. I am only buying enough to use all 8...

    Suggestions for my studio room

I just want this room to be acceptable to record in, and mix in. If I can get the room to a point where I can just gate out what I absolutely need to, im fine. In fact, I didnt even plan on gating much of anything, I want the sound to fill up in the room and to achieve a certain amount of...

    Suggestions for my studio room

So I moved in to a new house, saved the bigger bedroom for my studio, and I was hoping to get some suggestions on placement and then soundproofing. Sadly this room must act as my control room AND live room. The room is around 20ftx20ft with about 12-15ft high ceilings. The floors are original...

    Gibson L-1

I checked out the inventory and it seems umanov doesnt have a vintage right now. Do you think if I inquired they would find one?

    Gibson L-1

I would assume that it could still be ordered. I even inquired about that through a dealer and they had nothing for me. They have new L-1's coming out for production but it looks as though they screwed that one up too.

    Gibson L-1

I cant seem to find one the non-robert johnson reissues. The 5 Star Dealer 1930's exclusive is what I would want, but its like pulling teeth to get one.

    Recording Vocals with Analog Board

If you have it going in to any kind of DAW why not just stack tracks and pick the winners out of each section of the song? Basically just a giant seamless collage. Once you get that right, try double tracking. Then theres always the option of getting an extremely flattering pre + a mic that was...

The worst thing that could happen.

Yes. I also got my 80-8, its DBX, and the speed control up and running last night. No noise from them. Seems like my amp is just a piece of garbage...

The worst thing that could happen.

Here's the thing, the amp will make this noise without even having a cable plugged in to it. I can put the conditioner in to the wall, the amp in to the conditioner, and just turn it on. I've yet to notice it coming through anything else in the house though. PS- The radio station also happens...

The worst thing that could happen.

I just moved in to a new house, moved all my recording gear over, starting plugging things in, and when I sat down to play my guitar through an amp (plugged in to a conditioner) I got radio signals coming in to it. Apparently I live about a mile from a radio station. Im pretty much having a...

    The advantages of recording analog

This is very true. And I agree. But sometimes I listen to tracks like Monkey Man and think "were doing it wrong, this is the way to record" which is why im dedicated to an analog/retro philosophy. Give me a Helios and some Ampex machines any day, it would be worth the headaches.

    Gibson L-1

Hey everybody. Looking to buy a used Gibson L-1. Ideally a 1929-30's/60's or one of the 1990's reissues. Ive looked all over and been beaten to the ones Ive found at least 5 or 6 times. Let me know if any of you locate one or are looking to sell.

    Teac/Tascam 2 Track?

Im a trash in trash out guy. I try to get it perfect when Im micing (and I mic minimally, especially the drum kit, 5 mics max), I generally try to avoid compression if I can, and I do mixing in mono for the majority of the time, before I go stereo. Not to mention most of instruments are 50-70's...
