It looks very like the reel-to-reel machine my dad threw out recently. It had a hand held microphone and a built-in speaker, so you could record and replay to/from the tape.

The lame MP3 encoder is free to use. I don't think I've ever paid for an MP3 player, except maybe on mobile devices with MP3 built in.

Make sure you wipe it clean before you give it back.
