    Tape Editing (the eagles)

It's not that I don't get that multitracking and all the other tools of the modern studio Free you from having to perform in a single take, and that the studio itself is an instrument, that Allows you to do creative things that would otherwise be possible I'm totally cool with that. it's that...

Constructive feedback on my setup thus far?

Maybe you could snake some cables into the nearby rooms for tracking and use the bathroom For a reverb. I'm sure your wife wouldn't mind.

    Tape Editing (the eagles)

When people ask how do you get your music into the computor for editing, i always wonder; what editing? If you can't play or sing the part through from beginning to end, try another few takes. If you still can't create a great performance, you need to practice more. Just not a fan of abusing the...

Bay Area reel to reel techs?

+1 for Rance L and M seemed a little sceptical about the funky decks I brought in. Not that I blame them. The analog rules guy mostly does more "pro' decks, like Ampex. There is some good info in the sticky on calibration if you want to do it yourself. Bench time can add up quick.

    What's the deal.

As an aside, the 'other place' has as it's very name the concept of being unable to resist buying more gear. It also has a lot more professionals, including people who work on the highest profile projects. This place is, well, 'home' recording. Less shouting and snobbery here, but they are...

    What's the deal.

The "pro" decks often were not crammed into a small box to fit into your bedroom studio, but were built into big frames for easy access for repair and adjustments. They were also expected to run day and night for year after year. That's why they cost twice as much as the prosumer decks. That...

Taking my tape machine to the repair center: Any thoughts on what I should ask for?

You should be able to find some decent techs in san Diego. Otherwise, LA has the best. However; I have found in general that bench charges can add up pretty quick. Often they surpass the value of the deck itself. Also, modding and upgrading stuff can be a can of worms especially without a clear...

Old Akia and Roberts tube reel to reels.

I know what you mean about hacking these old decks up. You end up with a landfill carcass. On the other hand, these things are worth almost nothing as decks. They sell used for what, $25? And if they need work, the bill from a repair tech could be hundreds of dollars. This forum aside, I don't...

Old Akia and Roberts tube reel to reels.

I dug mine up, but was a 977 which is a solid state version, I believe. Do the tube versions actually sound any good?

Old Akia and Roberts tube reel to reels.

Thanks for posting the link. There is a guy who posted a lot on another forum and also eBay Who fixes these up for a fee. From what I read, he has taken money from folks who have not gotten their units, So watch out for that. I've got one sitting around here. Going to dig it out today and take...

" I'm not getting talked out of it" Haha love it. The zerotronics is basicly a version of the PAIA reverb. His needs make up gain. I thing the paia might need it also? Room verb is cool. I use a tiled bath or you can put a mic in a metal can or whatever. Or get a tape echo or space echo. diy...

The Ever-Popular "Which Reel-to-Reel Should I Buy?" Question

I would avoid eBay if possible for tape decks. Descriptions are often less than accurate, As far as history and condition. But the main thing is the shipping. Not only expensive, but your deck is Going to take a beating in transit. If you get lucky and get a local listing, Maybe you pick it...

The Ever-Popular "Which Reel-to-Reel Should I Buy?" Question

Are you saying the heads are still available for the decks you mentioned? You could always have them relapped. Besides, if they are in decent shape and the deck is set Up correctly, it's not as if they wear out that fast. If you used them every day, don't you think a set of heads would last A...

The Ever-Popular "Which Reel-to-Reel Should I Buy?" Question

Checked out some of your songs. Sound great. They could easily be done entirely on an 8 track Crosstalk: maybe a bit. For your kind of music, not so noticeable. Besides, a few analog artifacts here and there add to the vibe. 'I knew her under her dress' ' a plastic ocarina bout five miles long'
