Allen & Heath vs Mackie vs Soundcraft

All I can tell you is that my experience with a Mackie Onyx has been great.

    balanced cables...

You don't need balanced cables if you are using short runs, as is likely to be the case in a small studio patchbay. Patchbays are like anything else - you do get what you pay for unless you are at either end of the extremes of price. The cheapest patchbay on the market is the cheapest for a...

HELP! Need A Condenser that's good for 30-Voice Choir, in Atlanta, GA, for THIS WEEK

Hey - Good work! That's a lot juggling in the air at once. I'm coming up on my concerts in May and just took delivery of some mini XLR plugs to replace a couple of cables that will let me use my boundary mics. These will sit on small shelves down at the feet right and left of the chorus, on top...

Tell me about normalization - what is it and what does it do?

In concept, it "can" be used to level the sound of a CD so that everything will sound approximately the same volume. In my very limited experience, it just makes the CD sound like hell because it usually butchers the peaks and yields a bunch of square waves. Not a good tool for that use. In...

Best Budget Mic for Grand Piano

Try omni. You'll pick up reflections from the room that may add some depth.

    Four questions

I'll echo what Light said, but I'm personally partial to Taylor. For your purposes, a Taylor is likely to be a bit brighter sounding. i'd also encourage you to try a couple of different body styles of acoustics. Although we tend to think of a dreadnaught when we think "acoustic," dreadnaughts by...

What's a good affordable condencer for recording acoustic guitar?

I have a pair of Studio Projects B1s that I use for all kinds of oddball stuff and one time just tried one out on my Taylor. It was great - a couple of feet away, side address at the octave fret - no problem. I could control the finger/fret noise by mic positioning. New - what is it, about a...

Cheap as nuts reverb that doesn't suck?

The Lexicon MX200 can be used as a stand alone unit or connected to your computer via USB and controlled with software. Great little unit; I have one in my PA rig. $ 200 new.

Best Budget Mic for Grand Piano

I would stick with a pair and first I would pick small diaphragm condensers. A pair because the signals from the bass and treble sides are so different it is hard to get an accurate close signal without more than one mic. I suppose it matters what style music you will be playing, but especially...

Best Budget Mic for Grand Piano

I have some older design Naiants and love them. They have a bit of self noise, but that is usually filtered out easily. Otherwise I use MXL 603s which, although versatile, are a bit sharp. Check the other thread for a recording using a set of Crowns.

    Equipment to record Grand Piano

Here is a recording I did in May of 2004 of Mary Jane Reynolds (faculty, Monteverdi Music School, Montpelier Vermont) playing the Nocturne in Db by Chopin using a matched pair of Crown CM-700s in the primary position over the strings. Piano was a Steinway Model C (7.5 ft) in a large, live room...

    Equipment to record Grand Piano

That's a nice piano. My wife has an RX-2. There are a bunch of grand piano micing techniques, but I'd try this first. Try a couple of small mic booms / small condenser mics over the strings and about midway down the length of the piano. Have the top partway up and let the mics sit a few...

    Home studio charge?

Quote by the song or project and place your prices to recoup expenses at first. Go to an hourly rate only after you have a stable of product to show.

    Home studio charge?

When I charge at all, it's usually to cover or recoup expenses. So I will quote a price for a project and spend whatever time I have to in order to get the project done. My recording is pretty much linked with the live sound work I do, so I'm usually recording in the field and doing post...

    Delta 66 Setup help

Yep. Just be careful about setting gain on the monitors so they don't blow you out of your chair when you power up. That's why I use a little mixer - I have a gain control at my fingertips independent of the computer. If you use the mixer, you can also monitor on phones through the mixer's...
