I have to second the recommendation of the Korg Electribe ES-1. I've been using one for years, you can sample any sound you want into it, if you have a stack of fx pedals laying around you can run the source signal through those and sample it, the possiblities are endless. Once you've loaded...

One of my amps had similar symtoms, it turned out that the fx loop jack was dirty from lack of use.

I think it depends on what you are going for. If the 2 amps sound completely different, and you want the listener to be able to pick up on 2 individual amp sounds, I'd do both tracks of amp 1 hard left and both tracks of amp 2 hard right, but if you're just trying to make a unified guitar sound...

I'd say get some sort of gain boost pedal for more saturation and an EQ pedal with the mids scooped and the highs and some of the lows boosted.
