First project after month off of mixing.

Hey guys, I've taken the past month off from recording and mixing, busy with college. However I'm trying to get backing into it. Here's my first attempt. I'm going for a garage/blues/rock jam track thing. Let me know what can be done to improve. Thanks...

what kind of synth sound is this?

Hey guys, I'm a huge fan of bands like Dream Theater, I love the keyboard/synth chords used in their songs, heres a specific example. https://youtu.be/RT8dNkD-Byc?t=3m54s There is the guitar riff but behind it there is a great keyboard sound. If anyone could provide insight on what kind of...

I would play minor. Of course without hearing it's impossible to know. But the c# would likly be heard as a passing tone from c to d

You could play c, and again were taking about power chords, but if you played A5 to C5 it would suggest a minor key since c is the minor third. I think this discussion is never going to end so i'm just going to end it with this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo-vmk7f6bo

But you can be sure if it's a minor key or major key. If a power chord is played then the next power chords root is the minor 3rd of the first chord then your going to be in a minor key. It's if a major 3rd then your in a major key.

    Mixing on headphones

Thanks for the replies. My speakers are pretty good though so that's not the issue. I may buy some studio monitors. For now I've been setting levels and some eq with headphones then I'll listen to the track on speakers and adjust.

which of these two mixes sound better?

what do you mean about balanced eq-wise?

    Punk Rock Track

The less chords the more possible keys it could be in, but if I played A5, C#5, E5, what key would you use to solo over it? you would have to use A major, or a mode of A major (A mixolydian, A lydian, etc.). So its not in one exact key, but it is in a key, the lead guitarists would determine...

The third note of the scale is what give A major the A major sound. So if you play an A power chord then a C# power chord you've put the third note of the scale into the listeners ear hinting that the song is in A major.

    Mixing on headphones

I have a great pair of studio monitor headphones, I usually mix using them but the problem is when I finish mixing and export the song to listen to it on my computers speakers the tone changes. In my headphones the sound is bright and vibrant, on the speakers its duller. I don't know exactly...

    Punk Rock Track

Listen to the track I posted in the beginning of this thread, its made up of all power chords, but because of the chords used it outlines F minor.

Play them in progression, play A5, C#5, E5. then try soloing over that with A major. you don't play them all at once. but in a progression the power chords will outline the key of A major.

    Punk Rock Track

Actually you can use power chords to convey a key, you have to use to chords to outline the scale though. if for example you are play in A major, play an A power chord then play C# power chord, since C# is the major third of A, you will begin outlining A major and the more chords you add the...

Adding to the discussion of chords here. The reason why power chords are so popular is because when you don't have a major or minor 3rd you have many more options for what chord to go to next, also with heavy distortion too many notes is no good.
