    Mercenary selling out Neumann's

Some really interesting posts from some "younger" members (not including Harvey and myself; I'm a couple years older than even Harvey). Some history: back in the days when "that picture" was actually taken, the US had what were known as "fair trade" laws, which allowed the manufacturers to set...

    Shure Ksm's???

I have a KSM27 which I got for $270 at Guitar Center. Shure says it is a cardiod only version of the KSM44, which is multi-pattern. I think it is a good mic. A couple of weeks ago I got a Studio Projects TB-1 cardiod only tube mic and I LOVE IT. I paid $300 for it. It is similar to the SP T3...

    Studio Projects TB-1 vs T-3

Hi Paul, I think Steve's answer about waiting for the C1 and seeing what you think of it is the best way. Having said that I will also say that I have both a Shure KSM27 and a Studio Projects TB-1. The KSM27 is a good mic and I have absolutely no intention of getting rid of it, but the TB-1...

    well vocal with dynamic mic?!

Anywhither, the solution to singing off pitch with ear phones is to uncover one ear so you can hear yourself and use the headphone on the other ear so you can hear the music you are trying to record to. It is very common to sing off pitch if you use both sides of a set of headphones. Tom

    DMP3 to VTB-1?

My goodness!!!! It would certainly pay you to hop in your car and drive down to Bellingham or Seattle, pick up several and then go home...that is if you wanted one, or two, or three of them... Tom

    DMP3 to VTB-1?

I guess he doesn't want to tell me about my "clutter" either. HHmmmm. Oh well. Tom

    I've narrowed down my search...

MrGrooves, Do you, or anyone else, have any comparisons about similarities/differences between the Rode NTK and the SP TB-1 tube mics? I would really like to know how they compare. Thanks. Tom

    Cheap tube mic choice

I don't have and have never heard a V69me, but I own and have used for vocals both a Shure KSM27 and a Studio Projects TB-1. While I have absolutely no intention of getting rid of the KSM27, I have switched to using the TB-1 for my vocals because it is clearer, smoother, sits better in the mix...

    DMP3 to VTB-1?

Hey, Chessrock, Now you've got me really curious. What do you mean by "your signal chain is getting really cluttered"? I have a LD condenser mic going into a preamp (required, won't work without it) going into a compressor (actually setup as a limiter because I'm not a really good singer and...

    DMP3 to VTB-1?

I don't have much experience at all this so I'm wondering if I would get a better recording if I went from a DMP3 to a VTB-1 for vocal recording. I'm presently feeding my SP TB-1 tube mic into a DMP3 into an RNC into a Korg D1600 DRS. I have my Trinity and Pa80 keyboards going directly into the...

    leaving mic's set up....

I had the same problem because I recently got a SP TB-1 tube mic and don't want to constantly connect and disconnect the cable and clip mount, so I got a recloseable food storage bag (gallon size) and a packet of silica gel from some glucosamine/chondroitan that my wife takes and put the baggie...

    RNC: Any really nice settings?

Hi Middleman, I'm wondering what happened to the "make up" gain that the manual for the RNC and some posts I've seen here talk about where you set the gain to the same level as you set the threshhold in order to make up for the loss. Your settings use zero gain; why? Thanks. Tom

    RNC or Behringer Tube compressor

Middleman, I want to thank you again! Last night I set the RNC up the way you said (threshhold -3, ratio 25, attack 0.2, release 0.02, and gain 0.0) and it did just exactly what I was looking for. The vocals were clear and punchy in the mix with no overs but still had good dynamics. I would...

    RNC: Any really nice settings?

Hi Middleman, What is the object of setting one for "fat and slow"? Since my budget is very limited, would it work and be better for my vocals, to get a second RNC and set them up as a series pair the way you are doing or would just using the RNC as a limiter be enough? Thanks for your help! Tom

    RNC or Behringer Tube compressor

Thanks, Middleman. OK, here's what I'm doing and want to do: I'm using a SP TB-1 tube mic into an M-Audio DMP3 into the RNC and then into my Korg D1600 digital multitrack recorder. I'm doing an album of gospel songs and the way I sing isn't all that loud or soft, but it does seem to have a lot...

    upside-down vs. right-side-up?

I do hang my new SP TB-1 upside down but, so far, after 8 hours I can't feel any warmth in the mic housing, so I don't think it's generating much, if any significant heat. I do it, as Harvey says, to get it out of my line of site (I don't memorize lyrics). I also use a pop filter but I do it as...

whats the best mic in a $300 dollar price range?

I presently have two "$300 mics". The first one I got is a Shure KSM27 which is a good mic and I like it a lot. The second one I got just last tuesday and it's a Studio Projects TB-1 tube mic and I LOVE IT!!!!!! It is now my vocal mic of choice, although I have NO intention of getting rid of the...

    RNC or Behringer Tube compressor

Middleman, I'm going to display my ignorance here, but, isn't limiting what a compressor does? I don't understand why, if the RNC is setup properly you would also need to use a limiter; why? Thanks; I've still got a lot to learn. Tom

    RNC or Behringer Tube compressor

I too love my RNC. I use a Studio Projects TB-1 tube mic for my vocals (I really, really love it too!) feeding into an M-Audio DMP3 which feeds into the RNC which then goes to my Korg D1600 multitrack digital recorder. As soon as the price goes down, I will get a Studio Projects VTB-1 preamp...

found my choice for vocal mic

Last tuesday I went to Portland (Or) to Brownell Sound (thanks Kid Klash for turning me on to them) and got myself a Studio Projects TB-1 tube mic. I LOVE IT! It is warm, clear, smooth and all around great sounding mic. It will now replace my Shure KSM27 for all (or at least most) of my vocal...
