If you don't have access to "monitors", a good stereo amp and speakers will do.

I'm not recommending anything, except that you listen to your reference tracks on the monitors you intend to use before you start mixing. That goes for the best, most expensive monitors as well as the budget models.

I think you missed my point. A KRK mix doesn't necessarily sound different from a mix made with any other monitors. Knowing how your monitors sound is what makes the difference. :)

You should listen to a number of commercial songs you're familiar with (reference tracks) through any monitors you use. The reason those folks said their KRK mixes don't translate well to other systems could be because they've never heard what a professional mix sounds like through the KRKs.

Guitar Center does sell little analog mixers. You don't have to multitrack. You can record and mix in one take with a cheap Behringer mixer and a regular stereo cassette recorder. Just don't expect that setup to prove some point about the real or imagined superiority of analog over digital. And...

The little Behringer mixers I've used sounded harsh, and the channels burned out rather quickly. I could've had a more robust, musical-sounding board from the get-go for what I spent on them. Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. ;)
