    troubleshooting tascam 388 record problem

... The record process takes more energy to imprint onto tape than the playback process takes to read back signal from tape. The heads should be clean and shiny like a mirror. Any small bits of gunk or sludge may prevent the recording input signal from reaching tape. I've seen this several...

    Foster 280 vs. Tascam 414?

Yes,... Sounds to me like the main drive belt has failed, come off and likely wrapped itself around the main motor shaft & pulley, which causes the humming noise caus the motor's jammed. Best to not play with it more til you've looked under the covers, lest you burn the motor out!! Good luck...

    Tascam mx80 mix mixer

It's a very cool unit! You could even break the Access SND/RCV loops on each channel and use them as 8 discrete preamp Direct-Outs to something. :spank::eek:;)

questions about PGM Busses and other functions on Tascam 388

It's been a while since I used the 388. I seem to remember that when a track is rec-enabled and inputs are assigned to pgm-busses, when you also press the Stereo L/R button on a channel, the Monitor section auto-mutes. Given that this is a vague recollection, I believe it's because the Monitor...

    Tascam M-___ Story...

... That old Frankenmixer is really an amazing unit with too many options for the average thinker. :spank::eek:;)

Tascam 414 not working completely well. sounding lower and getting noises

... You should start by cleaning the heads with alcohol and swabs. I'd also look into demagnetizing the heads with a demag wand. A magnetized head might produce clicks and pops on playback, possibly affecting the output, but a dirty head could affect output and recording levels. :spank::eek:;)

What are some good cassette 4 tracks that are easy and immediate?

... The Tascam 424mkIII is the latest Portastudio made, and therefore would stand to be in the best condition. Make sure it includes the dedicated power module/cord! However, there are many other Tascam Portastudios of high quality that are older & might require a little refurbishment, if you...

    Tascam 48 Heads.

... I think the 48 heads and lifters look significantly worn, but for $100 all included it can't be that bad. It either works, may need TLC, or you can part it out & recoup your $$ very easily. Shipping on the lot will kill you though, so be careful. Also, depending on how it's packed, could be...

    Tasacam 244 questions

Sorry for generalizing a bit too much. I'm aware of the X15, Porta02, etc., being channel-to-track assignment. Thank you for the relevant response. Pre-mixing and buss assignment are moot points in the digital era, I think was my point & hence the (almost) lost concept of input-side mixing...

    Tasacam 244 questions

Saw some things here &... I thought I could try to help straighten out the facts. I'm not in a flame war with anyone here. More like giving tips and props to you for focusing on the 244. An advanced and worthy device from an entirely other age of recording. Separate the concepts between a 4x2...

    Tasacam 244 questions

Sorry,... ;) This is patently wrong. [EDIT: however, the 4-simul setting does record to all 4 tracks simultaneously.] Also completely wrong. However, this section is exactly correct! Thank you! :spank::eek:;)

    Tasacam 244 questions

;) No, it's not. In the last 15-or-so years. Only to those who cut their teeth on input-to-track architecture, the dumbed down design format found in digital, where supposedly "input-side" mixing is irrelevant due to theoretically unlimited track count. (i.e., fix-it-in-the-mix philosophy)...

Tascam M-30 or Fostex 450 for Tascam TSR-8

... The M30 mixer has adequate switching architecture to switch between recording, monitoring, dubbing and mixing. The M30 does not have top panel sends & receives, but it has adequate SND>RCV patch points on every channel and buss. However, these patch points have no bearing on the switching...
