    muffled sounding mix

Well the main problem I can imagine with the drums is probably phase. When your mixing down to one stereo track, you really need to make sure the kit is miced very well, which can be very hard to do when you are using 5 or more mics. The best drums sounds I've gotten were with 4 mics, but the...

Specifically using 2 B1's for stereo recording

It makes a lot of sense, I'd go for it as well.

best way to record drums with this setup?

Well you have plenty mics, you can experiment and do what you want, but most people are gonna tell you the c4's overhead, d112 on kick, 57 on snare. I usually like toms mics, maybe you could use the other mics as toms mics, but I myself probably wouldn't use a condenser on toms unless I had...

Just another Drums Recording question (using my mics) :-)

What type of music are you recording?

Speakers or Headphones for monitors? (for a low price range) What should I choose?

That's very true. Take my advice lightly. It is hard to mix with phones, can be done, but it's much more difficult in the long run. I basically just say, get what you can and do what you can do now, experience is the best way to get great mixes. Plus having a good set of phones is good for a lot...

Speakers or Headphones for monitors? (for a low price range) What should I choose?

Hey man, I would say get what you can and just start recording a ton. Sure it's a bitch to mix on headphones, but the AKG's are pretty nice and you could save up for some future monitors and you'll have a nice set of phones. Just referance your mixes on other stuff, like a well set-up stereo...

    old time radio sound

well, you probably tried this, but generally the easiest way to fake that sound is to moderately roll off the high and low end on a EQ. I believe the old time radio sound was from mostly mid-range.

How to record a clean distinct bass

Alos, have the bass player play closer to the bridge if he doesn't already. It will help get you a more ditinct sound that usually cuts through better. For me it does at least.

real decent books on mixing and recording ?

I've got the 5th edition, got it for a class. I'm not a huge fan of it, but it gets recomended a lot. It's a good all around book, but in my opinion a lot of the info is very vague and general and could be found easily on the internet. For example, I now know what M/S recording is, I just still...

    presence

Hopefully your doing nondestructive editing, you can play around all you want on the original as long as you save it at some point. I would think DAW's would actually make experimenting like this easier. Read lots, experiment more, repeat... Takes tim, but you'll start to get the hang of mixing...

    Mastering via Internet?

I would stay away from there. Check out this thread. https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=126821 Instead, save up a bit more and go with one of the more knowledgable guys on this board like Massive Master or masteringhouse. Then, let us know how they did. Good luck.

    Too much sound?!?

Hey Tom, is this true for all DAW's? Thanks for the info, I had heard about this, but wasn't quite sure if it was true or not.

    Samson C02 condensers?

Well, never used a C02, but this track used C01's for everything, except the close drum mics. I don't believe it's all that hissy, haven't listened to it for a bit. (You can hear the room at the beginning, which comes from the acoustic track.) The noise will depend a lot on your pre-amp as well...

    A Great Inconvenience

Try clicking that green circle on the recording meters. If you can't see the recording meters push F4, or F5, or F6, I know one of those is the recording meters. There may be other factors invloved though.

Does anyone know how to get that noisy vocal sound?

I've done this pretty easily by just cloning a track and using very liberal high and low pass on it. So it basically sounds like a phone or an old radio or something. Then I just mix it in with the other original vocal and I kinda get a vocal sound that sounds like it's coming iff a radio in the...

    reference monitor problems

Yeah, definately sounds like a room problem. Unfortunately it will take a lot of time to get used to your monitors and your room, but room treatments are generally super expensive, so you may have to deal with it. Try using some quality headphones every once in a while to reference your bass...

    Help! DMP3 Mic preamp/phantom power/low end hum

Don't know if it will work, but you could try one of those adapters that has no ground plug on it, I've heard sometimes that can help because things might be double grounded or something. But that's just a random suggestion.

    Odd Guitar Rec. Setup

You'll hear it time and time again. Whatever sounds the best is the best. IMO, becoming a great engineer is just learning about how to capture what sounds best (and ultimately mixing it well with other sounds), and becoming a successful engineer is basically learning how to capture what other...

    Which Condensor Microphone?

I'm sure you won't go wrong with whatever you get man. You're probably not gonna be able to audition all of them, so just grab one up for cheap and start recording. If you could, I'd say try to save for a bit longer and go with something in the $200 range, like a CAD M179, or something else...

    About to buy...

I wouldn't let people convince you not to get the KSM32's. Those are great mics and having a pair for drum overheads would be awesome. Plus, you're right they will work on a lot of other things as well. I'm no expert, but it just seems like you made the right choice in the first place to me.
