You could possibly try limiting the overhead tracks so that it only acts when the snare is at it's loudest. Since the snare is probably the loudest thing in the overheads it would only effect that. I'm not sure if it will work or not, but may be at least worth a shot.

I've upgraded to 512mb Ram, which works pretty good. The thing is I'm running at super low CPU power, but the tracks are jumping because there were too many. I figured upgrading the harddrive should at least give me a few more tracks than my old slower hard drive. I'm using tracktion by the way.

I believe Figure 8 mics have the most amount of proximity effect so I wouldn't neccesarily use one of those. Omni has the least so that may help. But I'm sure most mics you would conisder would have variable patterns.

You can't go wrong with a SM57, I've personally never tried a sennheiser 609 yet. I recently got an Audix i5, and it's a killer mic. Similar the the 57, except it seems to have a fuller low end response and not quite as much of a increase in the higher mids. It's a little darker. I't be a toss...

Maybe you could sell them, and save a bit to get a nice two channel pre or something. Like a FMR RNP, or an Art MP Gold, or something like that. That way you could use the mixer for recording drums or the whole band live, but you would have the nice pre for overdubs and stuff when you get down...
