    4-trackers: Thoughts on bouncing?

I started home recording in the mid-90s with a Fostex 280. Still have it. It was magic. I was doing guitar heavy electronica at that time. All the drums came from my Boss DR-5 Dr. Rhythm Section (still have it too). I used Cakewalk to sequence the drums, synth bass, and keys in MIDI, all...

    Sweetening vox without tuning?

Not to mention, all the digital processing ITB adds up. The artifacts, the nastiness. The more you do the worse it sounds. So much better to work on getting it right at the source.

    Sweetening vox without tuning?

That's the beauty of music and art in general: If you like it, who's to say you're wrong? Whoever mixed the tune was obviously going for that effect. Maybe it was to mask a weak vocal performance, maybe for other reasons entirely. If the goal of a mix is to compensate for the weakness of...

    Sweetening vox without tuning?

Hey Nick. Just my opinions, but I don't think tuning should introduce problems. Keep the adjustments small and subtle, resist the temptation to tune every note, and it shouldn't even be noticeable. In this particular video, the vocals are just buried. Maybe that's the solution, but it...

    "Lifeless"

Guitars are too loud for me. They overwhelm the kick and snare. Drums are top heavy, with cymbals dominating.

    The Surface - alternative

Coming along well. There's some inconsistency in the bass level that I hadn't noticed before. During the verse it sounds about right, filling out the low end of the guitars. During the chorus it might be a tad low. During the bridge it definitely sounds low to me. Interesting variation in...

    Words in a Box

It sounds pretty good. I like the song and playing. There are a couple of places where you have an extended stretch without vocals. Maybe add a lead instrument there to give the listening something to focus attention on?

In Your House - The Cure cover version.

Hey Bubba. Well, you picked one of the most boring songs the Cure ever did! But you do a credible job. That Jag sounds beautiful--super glassy. It's making me want one. I see why that JC-120 is popular. There is something funky going on with your guitar FX that I hear in the opening riffs...

Newbie... second song -- Mother Nature Is a Serial Killer

I'm not trying to convert you. It's a minority here who mic amps. I judge results, not process.

Newbie... second song -- Mother Nature Is a Serial Killer

Room acoustics are not critical for close miking guitar amps. Your spare bedroom would be fine.

    Sun sets on the Sea

Sounds pretty good. I'm hearing a little bit of mud around the lead vocal when it hits notes in the lower register. I'd work on getting a little more clarity and separation around that vocal. Nice arrangement! What drums are you using?

    "Lifeless"

The low end sounds fuller. The drums are improved. For my taste they are still a bit cymbally and washy rather than being low-down and groovy. I'm sure that made a ton of sense... ;) But it sounds pretty good overall.

Newbie... second song -- Mother Nature Is a Serial Killer

This is good, man! Reminds me of the Cramps. Like the other, it needs more low end. Guitars sound great! What is your setup?

Newbie... first new post -- Smother Me

You're not far off. Singing and playing are good. The song is promising. The vocal phrasing seemed stiff in the louder parts of the songs. I assume the song is about some fetish. We are non-judgmental! ;) The low end is lacking. You are mixing like a guitarist. Drums and bass need to...

Let us know how you like the Antiquities. I've got the 60's Surf ones in my Strat.

I'm about to post a shootout in the OP: Waves Abbey Road Plate vs Ambiance freeware. To be fair, the Ambiance has benefited from the ongoing refinement of the mix. Acoustics are a bit lower compared to the WARP mix. Let me know what you think.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I agree. Too much 'verb. The Waves plugin also gives a darker reverb than plate patches in Ambiance. Let me play with it some more. Looking again at the drum VST, oops! It wasn't Addictive at all. I was using the Rock: Dry drum samples in Jamstix4. I'll have a look at...

New mix in the OP. I retracked and edited the harmony vox and some parts of the lead vocal. Should be tighter. I changed the reverb from Ambiance to the Waves Abbey Road Plate, which I just bought and wanted to try out. How does the ambiance sound on the vocals and acoustic guitars?
