The Guitar Tone and Mix Thread

Marshall Origin 20 watt head: 1 watt setting I've had a few days with the new Origin 20 watt head. It's a groovy amp. Not what I really associate with Marshall, but my only first-hand experience is the DSL. This is a vintage style amp that loves clean to edge-of-breakup. It has a really...

    new acoustic tune- "Lake Katherine"

Hi Gonzo. I know you're not looking for mix advice at this stage, but reducing the ambiance on those guitars would make it easier to hear what's going on in the song. For me chorus is a letdown. That "out of the light" part doesn't really go anywhere. It doesn't add energy or build to a...

    Marshall Origin 20 head

Thanks lizard. I thought about the 50 watt head but my home recording sweet spot seems to be 15-25 watts. Still loud as hell but I track with the cab in another room and me monitoring through my studio monitors. I aim to keep what hearing I have left. Another reason why I am done buying...

    Marshall Origin 20 head

New amp came today. I had my eye on the two new lines of Vietnamese Marshall heads and combos that came out this year. There is the Origin series, which is supposed to be based on vintage low gain Marshalls. They come in 20 and 50 watt heads as wells as assorted combos. There is also the DSL...

    ART MPA & VLA Combo

If you want to use the VLA II in your input chain, you'll need a preamp in front of it. I would buy them both together and be done with it. You won't be disappointed.

How to effectively simulate bass guitar with MIDI keyboard?

Simple parts with a lot of eight notes work best. Notice the placement of the MIDI note relative to the subdivision. The bass can lean ahead, lay back, or play right on the money. Don't program all the notes the same velocity. Mix it up. Listen to the dynamics in a real line and make the...

    Collaboration via email

Don't send Mp3 files back and forth. Use Wav files. If they are too large to send by email, then put them in a dropbox or google drive and send the link. Both those services are available free.

How to effectively simulate bass guitar with MIDI keyboard?

I am absolutely suggesting he get a real bass and learn to play it. Yes, there will be a learning curve. But better to spend the time learning something that will extend his musical range in the long run, rather than trying to figure out how to program MIDI parts that will never sound...

How to effectively simulate bass guitar with MIDI keyboard?

You can get a used Squire for $100. You don't need an amp. Plug it straight into your interface. Beats pissing around trying to fake it with MIDI.

So Far We're So Far Away

I listened to #2. The harshness is much less than before, though not entirely gone. My acid test is to crank up the volume until something makes me want to turn down again, then address that thing. I can definitely get this mix louder than the previous one. It sounds like you lowered the...

So Far We're So Far Away

Great song and performance, 3M. Is this IBB on drums? There's a harshness to the mix from the opening guitar onward. It sounds better turned lower. Turning up gets unbearable. Are you doing some gain reduction on the master bus? If so, might want to back off a hair. The lead vocal is...

Left Out In The Rain by Themuzic

Welcome back. There some obvious artifacts going on in the reverb. Soundcloud is known to mangle the sheen of your music, but you might want to think about how whatever you are doing on the master bus is interacting with your reverb.

"Say You're Sorry" - new VHS original

The up part of the song is dramatically better. Sounds like you lowered the snare and beefed up the low end. That chorus hook is sweet. I'm still not hearing your lyrics well in the opening and in the quieter part between the choruses. You are singing at the bottom of your range. There's...

"Say You're Sorry" - new VHS original

Vocals could come up in the opening and throughout, getting stepped on by the guitars. I strain to hear all the lyrics. Snare is waaaay loud in fast parts of the song. Here and there it feels a little stiff, timing wise. Definitely better without the lead. Great song with a catchy chorus!

    EQ plugins that Bleed.

If you are worried about muddiness, why the saturation plugin? That's just adding a layer of digital noise on top of your signal, plus whatever frequencies it might boost or nerf. If you must have the saturation plugin and don't like how it affects your EQ plugin, why not put it after the EQ...

General approach to mastering, am I going about this in the right way?

Sounds cool. I'd love to hear one of your tunes. Post up! I've also been experimenting with mastering lately. I have been using Waves Abbey Roads TG mastering channel strip and other Waves compressors as needed. Struggling with transients. I try to get 2-3 dB reduction through the limiter...
