LDC's for acoustic guitar on a budget

I've had an sE2200a for years that's always done well for acoustic guitars, and picked up an Avantone CK7 about a year ago which has become my "go to" acoustic mic. Although i never know the $ price of stuff as a UK resident, i think both these mics should fall in the around $200 price bracket.

Condenser mics for vocals on a budget

In the used market you should be able to find either an older sE2200a (the silver one, not the rubberised black one) or the older Rode NT1 (the matt grey one, not the shiny silver one) both of which are outstanding mics. New the sE X1, as Bobbsy said, is pretty cool and should come in under...

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

I don't need to man, his wife already does that! The amount of gigs we played where he had an "allowance" for the nights. I mean, ffs, the guys 31; he's old enough and ugly enough to be able to spend/waste his money however he see's fit! Apart from the night where my three bands mates went to a...

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

I don't always use a pop filter but i always cover the mic (i use an old plastic dynamic mic wallet) and do what i call the "blast test". i put my back of my hand towards the sound source and feel for blasts of air. Any blasts, pop filter goes up. I'm always surprised how much air an amp can...

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

Tbf C1000's aren't even that good for this as they're not heavy enough, and even as a paperweight they just roll off stuff :D *in my best gangsta style voice* DAAMMMNN SONNN! DAT BE SA-WEEETT! Ok, i am gonna email absolute on monday fo' sho' :) ^^^Ne'er a finer word has been spoken^^^ If you...

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

Ahh man, i was gonna email absolute on monday to ask about it but i may just have to shop elsewhere :( after posting i did then see the big "available on request" rather than in stock msg  Which bit, the being fragile or needing a shed load of clean gain? Granted modern ribbons are...

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

Ummm, stil £89 here but everywhere else is £149 :) Yeah, i think the vast majority of home recordists still fear ribbons as 1) they are super fragile and 2) you need a half decent preamp to get clean recordings with one. Plus they tend be much less versatile than your average LDC and many HR's...

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

Cool, we shall await some recordings :thumbs up: :O NOOOOOOOO! This made me gasp IRL and made me head straight to google to double check and, sure enough, a couple of the stores now have it as discontinued and a couple of others have it as "available on request"! That sucks! Tbf i stand by...

Buying four microphones on a budget

Hmmm, now there's an idea. Tbf you could record everything with those four mics, or even three of them; C02's as overheads, C01 on kick and then you could try the C01 on snare or just use the three mics. It may not work for rock or metal for other stuff it could be pretty cool.

    Mix recomendation for vocals

Tbf the sE2200a is bright, as are quite a lot of the cheaper LDC mics, but i always found the brightness of the sE to be smoother and less harsh than the NT1a and seemed to work on a wider range of voices. If you want a smoother/less bright mic then you could always look at the MXL V67g or V67i...

    Mix recomendation for vocals

I'm a big fan of the sE2200a and the new sE2200a II C is apparently exactly the same just in the new cooler casing (the other sE2200a MKII has different polar patterns and stuff as well). Tbf the recording in the youtube doesn't sound too bad at all, but a common complaint of the NT1a is that...

    Set my home studio up!!

It's like the older Metasonix gear; The Butt Probe is probably the most "polity" named of their whackier named gear :D Tbf there was a time when BFD2 was mega cheap, but by the looks of it EZDrummer have just undercut them a shed load. Cheeky muthas! Oh, there's also Superior Drummer which is...

    Set my home studio up!!

Reaper is available on macs so if you were happy with it on PC then the mac version is no different. However, if you want something for both standard recording/mixing and making "dub step" etc then Logic is pretty versatile for both. I've only ever played around with EZdrummer lite but it's...

    Mix recomendation for vocals

Kinda depends on several things man. firstly, what does your voice sound like? Secondly, were you happy with the NT1a before it broke? If so, the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes in to play. If there was something you didn't like about it then can you pin point what in...

Your "Desert Island" sub $250 ribbon

Tbf, although not my "desert island" ribbon, the Apex 205 with even the basic blast filter mod is outstanding for £69 (what's that, about $100 ish???). I'm also surprised not to see any mention of anything Cascade yet.... And the Avantone looks ace, but i am a sucker for most things Avantone ;)
