    Good All Around Rack Synth

I think the Roland XV-5080 is still one of the best rack modules around. It has 128 voice polyphony, 8 expansion slots (4 SR-JV, 4 SRX), can be filled with 128 megs RAM to load samples, 32 channel MIDI, plus a nice big LCD to edit on. Because of the expansion slots you can really customize it...

2-Channel Mic Preamps in $500-1000 ranged

Mine is not modded. I was doing the comparison purely in the digital realm, the conversion was happening after the interface. I was strictly interested in the data transfer only. If I want better conversion than the Traveler what I do is hook up my UA 2192 to it. That pretty much does it for me.

Am I crazy? Leaving "the box"

RD423, that's a digital mixer versus a digital mixer. Both are essentially in the box, even though one is an external hardware box. What we are talking about here is mixing ITB (digital) versus OTB (analog). I used to own a couple Tascam DM-24 mixers and found little difference between them and...

2-Channel Mic Preamps in $500-1000 ranged

I use a MOTU PCI 424 in my studio, and a MOTU Traveler with my laptop. I A/B'ed the two interfaces, playing back audio files in my home studio. The only variable was the interface itself. The PCI version edged out the firewire version by a hair. It was subtle.

Am I crazy? Leaving "the box"

If you mean one of the new Mackie Onyx 1604 mixers, then that would be quite viable. In fact, I think you would notice an improvement in your mixes. Using *both* ITB and OTB in my opinion is the best of both worlds. You can do the detailed cleanup and fixing very easily ITB, and then go OTB...

2-Channel Mic Preamps in $500-1000 ranged

You are used to thinking of converters being built into your audio interface. It's two different things really: converting audio and then transferring audio to your computer via firewire. What I do is use the 2192 for the conversion, and then go digitally from that into a digital input on my...

2-Channel Mic Preamps in $500-1000 ranged

I use a Universal Audio 2192, a unit that is probably out of your budget. If you are eventually planning on ending up with a Great River, I highly recommend saving up for it now. After years of buying budget and mid-end gear and "upgrading" in increments, I now just save up and buy the good...

A/D convertors in external boxes question

If you can find a used ART DI/O I can recommend it. A dedicated AD/DA box, but inexpensive and sounds surprisingly good. I have two of them.

A/D convertors in external boxes question

Do you mean dedicated converters, or units built for other purposes that happen to have good converters?

2-Channel Mic Preamps in $500-1000 ranged

Forget about having the preamps and the converters in the same box. It doesn't matter, and it severely limits your choice of preamps. Choose the preamps you want and then choose the firewire converter you want. That way you get the best of all worlds. I use a DAV Electronics BG-1 two channel...

    Having doubts about mbox/protools

If you are a student, and your school is using ProTools, and they suggest you use ProTools---then get an Mbox with ProTools. I don't know why you wouldn't. Think about what it will be like if you try to take classes with incompatible hardware/software. You'll be the class dunce. Always behind...

    soundguys...ARG!

Yes *but*: As far as the audience is concerned it's the band that sounds bad, not the sound guy. So it's really tough if the sound guy is not cutting it. And generally speaking the worse they are the more defensive and difficult to deal with they are. Somebody has to be watching quality...

Something just burnt out, not sure what

I would disconnect the hard drives for sure before starting it up again. Unplug the computer and open it up. Do a visual inspection, you might see the problem component quite easily. If there is something burnt out on a PCI board, I personally would remove that board and replace it. I'd rather...

    Do you buy used gears/equipments?

You can only sell the item and get your money back on it if it is indeed in the condition described when you bought it. I've been ripped off far too many times now to really trust used gear. Quite often the gear is not working as described or cosmetically in as good condition. Then you have...

Looking for more depth to recordings!

Normalizing just changes the volume level, and is really best to leave that alone for what you are talking about. Massive Master is absolutely correct in everything he said in his post. You should probably get a mic that suits your voice better. Then, you should try recording in all the...

Looking for more depth to recordings!

Far better than reading is assisting a recording engineer that knows what they are doing. That said, two books I would *highly* recommend are "The Recording Engineer's Handbook", and "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook", both by Bobby Owsinski. These books are well worth the money. You simply...

Analog --> Digital converter for RNP ??

If you can find a used Alesis DI/O converter, that would be a good budget converter for you. It does AD and DA conversion.

Analog --> Digital converter for RNP ??

What are you looking to spend? There are converters in all price ranges, so it's tough to make a recommendation without knowing your budget.

    Cheap Digital Mixer

If it were me I'd avoid the Behringer altogether. Too many problems, and it's not nearly as sophisticated or polished as the Tascam and Yamaha mixers. There's also the Panasonic/Ramsa DA7.

    Cheap Digital Mixer

I think you can get a Tascam DM-24 pretty cheaply these days. I used to own a couple of them and they are good sounding mixers with a lot of nice features like touch sensitive faders.
