I don't know, throwing up some bass traps and absorbers without really knowing how to treat a room could be just as bad as nothing at all.
the thing about near field monitors is that you are close enough to them that what you mostly hear is direct from the monitor. Hence "near field". The room...
Does your computer have a USB or firewire interface, or both? The interface depends on how much you have to spend. You can get a respectable interface for $300, less than what you'd pay for a good gate.
As far as affordable firewire interfaces, take a look at units by Presonus and Echo Audio...
That laptop should be great for recording.
What you need to do is get an external firewire hard drive and record to that. When recording, track count has more to do with the hard drive than the CPU, so no drive slower than 7200rpm. The internal drive on that laptop is most likely spinning at...
100% right on, great advice.
Do the bulk of your work in stereo from the beginning, then check in mono and make adjustments as needed. But then go back and see what it did to the stereo mix and make further adjustments.
You can absolutely get subtle compression out of the API 2500 hardware unit. Or make it pump. It's a great great unit.
As far as preferring the 2500 over the PSP MasterComp, they are two very different compressors that have their own sound and uses. I can't say that I like one more than the...
There are certain items I just don't buy used, and headphones are one of them. Drivers can blow, the cables can be intermittent. They are just kind of delicate things, and you want to know they are working properly when you get them. Better to find the best deal *new* on your choice of...
The 003/003R was not yet available when I bought my 002R. I don't use it's preamps, so I really can't say how they sound. However, overall I'm happy with how the unit sounds otherwise.
The Audio Technica ATH-M40 would be another to consider.
I own the 7506 and I've come to really not like it too much. Just doesn't seem accurate to me. Kind of like the Yamaha NS-10 was in that way, everybody used them but they didn't sound that good.
I think you need to broaden your search beyond these two compressors. There are other great buss compressors out there.
PSP MasterComp is one. Very clean sound, can definitely do that gentle caress thing...
Definitely get away from that SB. Once again, plug the output of the preamp into line inputs on the mixer. That's basically your whole issue right there, not much more to say than that. Just wire it up correctly and you are most likely good to go.
I guess I have a well set up studio then! It's been very smooth, as has Digital Performer.
The important thing for the original poster is that he know exactly what his needs are, and that the V-Studio meets them. For that kind of bread the unit should be flawless and it shouldn't require...
I use a couple different DAWs in my studio, one is MOTU's Digital Performer and their audio hardware, and the other is ProTools with a Digi 002R. I have the Digi setup mostly to be compatible with ProTools sessions files, and I am currently mixing an album in PT.
I have to say I have grown to...
That's your problem right there, you are double preamping your mic. You need to go from the preamp to a line level input on the mixer. That would be one of the 1/4" channel inputs.
I don't think you need a gate, you just need to get your current setup sorted out properly.
I would say that yes, $4,000 can be better spent. You can put together the same basic functionality for a lot less bread. Or for the same bread have a better system.
In my opinion, you could do better by purchasing some good converters and a control surface that works with your current DAW...
You've got a few different sounds going on in that sample. There's hiss, a soft buzz, and some sort of ticking sound.
I'm pretty sure you could reduce some of that by gain staging, as has been mentioned.
Be sure you connect the output of the preamp to the line input only channels on the...
If you get a gate, make sure it's a good gate, or else you'll have the problem of a cheap noise gate adding it's own noise floor. So in other words, to get the gate you really need, you'll spend as much or more than you would have spent on purchasing a good preamp in the first place.
Basically...
Don't bother with a wood stand, it's not practical. They cost more, and if you take them anywhere they'll get banged up in no time. They are strictly for show.
I use a stand very similar to this:

Great tunes tend to be recorded on great gear by great bands with great engineers. It all is part of the same thing. Greatness is not easy, and anyone striving for greatness is not going to put all that effort into creating a great song and then record it on lousy gear.
It's all how you...
