I need a warmer sound for my keyboards!

Another route to travel down in terms of warming up and "de-digitizing" synths sounds is to go with single ended noise reduction. An example of that is the DBX 929 card for their 900 rack. What I've found is that the same frequencies that are addressed for noise reduction are the same general...

    Yamaha MLA 7 preamps

They are not junk, I used to own one. I personally would take an MLA7 over those other units you mentioned. Not sure about four of them, but if you need that many channels and they are inexpensive then you could do a lot worse.

I need a warmer sound for my keyboards!

I used to own a couple of those Presonus TubePRE's and I really didn't think they did anything for keyboards. The tube gain is very clean and subtle on those, I don't think they have enough color. They basically sounded solid state to me. Not a bad tube preamp for $100 though, it is possible to...

I need a warmer sound for my keyboards!

If you are looking for a cheap $200 fix, I wouldn't bother. One of the best keyboard sounds I've ever heard was when I played a house that used an ADL 300-G tube DI. It sounded really great, and I know the sounds very well, having programmed the keyboard rig myself. But the 300-G is no longe...

Computer Audio Card vs. External A/D Question

Yeah, I can't explain it, but the PCI interface does sound subtly better than the firewire Traveler. I think it has to do with jitter somehow. And I am referring to a straight digital data pipe, yes.

Computer Audio Card vs. External A/D Question

There is a long thread about this already here at HomeRecording, but I notice that my MOTU PCI interface sounds better than my MOTU Traveler firewire interface. And that's on straight digital transfers/playback. Don't know why, and in the previous discussion I had at least one person...

Monster Cable, Etc. Better? Worth the Cost?

I think Monster cable has a lifetime replacement warranty, if one of their cables goes bad you take it in to the store and they replace it. So in that respect Monster is better.

    Transferring from analogue to digital

It seems like you can sell a used Presonus Firebox for around $180 on eBay. Do some good comparison shopping, buy the least expensive FireBox you can find, transfer your recordings, then eBay the FireBox and get most of your money back. So your cost of transfer will be much less than the full...

    Transferring from analogue to digital

The Presonus Firebox is a good suggestion, I used to own one of those. Here's another to consider: http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/FireWire/AudioFire4/index.php

    Field Recorder as Interface?

I think of an interface as being a real time recording device. In other words, you record audio through an interface and it goes directly to hard disk in your DAW. I don't believe the Edirol does that. It records to a memory card, and then you transfer that to your hard drive later. At least...

    Transferring from analogue to digital

I think you are not quite understanding the concept. You need a firewire or USB audio interface that will accept four inputs. You need 4 into 4, not 4 into 1. Even though the computer may have one USB input or one firewire input, you can buy interfaces that will allow you to record four inputs...

    Advise on Home Studio Upgrade

I'd get rid of those ADAT's first. Get yourself a Mac and a ProTools system. Depending on how many tracks you need to record at once, a Digi 003R might be enough for your needs. Keep the Mackie board for now, but get rid of most of that outboard you've got now and replace it with something...

    Mixer or Audio Buddy?

If my understanding is correct, you can record as many sources as the mixer will allow, but they will be mixed down to stereo in the mixer. So what your computer will get is stereo only.

    Apogee Rosetta 200 problem?

Make sure the levels are set correctly in the Presonus control panel application for their interface.

    Essential studio rack equipment?

On the other hand, show me an eq plugin that sounds as good as my Manley Massive Passive. Or show me a plugin that sounds like my Avalon AD2044, API 2500, or Distressors. They don't exist and won't. You can push "measurable parameters" all you want, but it comes down to sound and the action of...

    Mixer or Audio Buddy?

You would do your panning in the DAW software anyway, wouldn't you? Just record as two separate mono tracks and pan them as you wish. As far as the mixer, I'd take the Yamaha any day. I've had much better luck over the years with Yamaha gear than Behringer gear.

    Essential studio rack equipment?

With a lot of mixers you need to be careful about using line inputs, because in many cases they are still routed through the preamp. In other words, the signal is sent from the line input to an attenuator, and then to the preamp to re-amplify it. I believe Mackie boards are designed this way...

    Mixer or Audio Buddy?

Both the mixer and preamp you are considering are extreme budget units. Their performance will be roughly comparable in my opinion. If it were me I'd go more for whichever one had the features I needed, and less for considering the tone.

Inserting outboard compressor into my 003. I need advice.

You would put the 1176 in line on the 003. So for example, you'd connect the outs of the 1176 to ins 1-2 of the 003 and the ins of the 1176 to outs 1-2 of the 003. Then in the software you'd just use that I/O to send to the 1176. Likewise, if you wanted to use the inputs 1-2 but not use the...
