    Anyone Build Their Own Sub-Kick?

Ranjam, you really don't have to go to that much trouble. If you have an old stereo speaker lying around with a decent-sized woofer, simply wire the speaker's input to a low-Z input on your mixer or card. If you're using 1/4" jacks only, it's a direct connection. If you have to convert from...

Who is better Dave Grohl or Foo Fighter drummer Taylor Hawkins

Neither is better. Think cobalt blue peas.

Who is better Dave Grohl or Foo Fighter drummer Taylor Hawkins

These "who's the better player" threads are amusing. I also like peas and cobalt blue.

    are they serious?

Yep, that scheme is directed mainly to newbs or nonmusicians. Any coating will alter the cymbal's sound. If you want flavor, apply something after you buy it; like mayonnaise, peanut butter, anchovies, etc. Naked cymbals FOR THE WIN!

    No. They're cardioids.

Broken Sticks... All Over The Place

Jim Gordon once said that he doesn't think of hitting the drum per se, but rather pulling the note from it. Now if Jim had only applied that same thinking toward his mom...

    Ring in snare drum

Good ideas and suggestions! Have you done the "tap test" with a stick, close to each lug? This test can help. Strike the drum, in a circular pattern, about an inch from the hoop. If, near a particular lug, the sound is flat, dead, or too "ringy," or if the feel of the stick rebound doesn't...

how do YOU care for your cymbals?

For cleaning.. You may laugh, but Dow Bathroom Cleaner works GREAT. I've never heard anyone else mention this. Used it for years with no detrimental effects on the finish at all. It will remove the stamps though, so if you want to keep those, don't use Scrubbing Bubbles(R).

    Drum overhead rig

Nice rig. I did a smaller version of an XY mic mount for the Karma micro mics: Battery clamps, some copper wire. $8.

    Adobe Audition 1.5 Buffer Problems

Good advice, superspit (did I just type "superspit"?) From my experience, you should avoid selecting a secondary temp folder unless you have a screaming fast computer with high speed drives as he mentioned. I made the mistake of directing the secondary temp folder to a slow drive taken...

    Adobe Audition 1.5 Buffer Problems

Well, when you hit the record button to start a new track, the option box for sample rate, mono/stereo, and bit depth automatically appears. The default setting is 44100 unless you changed it. Also be sure you're using 16 bit, not 32 bit float. 32 bits will almost certainly cramp an older...

    Adobe Audition 1.5 Buffer Problems

Are you trying to record at a very high sample rate, above 44.1 KHz? If so, that may be putting too much of a strain on your PC, especially if it's an older one. Did the M-Audio come with a driver CD? Maybe you could try uninstalling and reinstalling the device.

Are some drums just not tunable?

You're probably better off not trying to tune to a specific pitch. Even if you manage do actually get a definite note out of a drum, you're going to have to live with it until you retune it. Do you really want to go through all that hassle when the band decides to change the song key? No...

What's the best mic for $2.49 to mic my cat?

Depends on what the cat is doing when you want to mic it. For hissing/screeching, a 2" speaker from an old cassette recorder or clock/radio will work if you hook the leads up to a 1/4" phone plug and crank the gain on your mixer. For getting discrete cat noises, such as the low rumble of the...

Broken Sticks... All Over The Place

I used to laugh about the "beaver dam" shavings every time i moved my kit after 2Bs at a hard rock gig. But there was something about that rim crack, eh? There were many other gigs where my stash of two pairs of 7As lasted for weeks. Still had the same amount of fun.

can i record drums without drum mics?

nero's lung offers good advice. It is possible to get a good drum sound with one microphone, but a lot of things have to come together. Your drums, the room, and the microphone all have to be good sounding instruments. Then, you have to be acutely aware of the volume level of each instrument...

    Adobe Audition 1.5 Buffer Problems

Under the System tab in Settings, Play/record Buffer, put 20 in the box. Try that, then 30 or 40 if need be. I suggested this in another thread, and it may be very helpful. Audio software uses a lot of computer if you're running an older PC. You need to free your computer from unnecessary...
