No sound on playback, no MIDI output devices?

Just installed Cakewalk Home Studio 2004. Hit play, no sound. Options|MIDI devices shows no inputs and Microsoft MIDI mapper for output. When I highlight MS MIDI mapper and click OK, it still give the No MIDI outputs selected error message. Any ideas about the fix? I'm running an HP...

    Marshall Jmp-1/Mesa 2:90 tube suggestions

If you can afford Mullards, get a set. If not, my favorite ax7 and 6L6 are the JJ's, best prices I've found at eurotubes.com.

    Boss DS-2 clipping diodes

Try a lead across C34 for a more trad overdrive sound. You can stick resistors in there in place of the diodes to ground to pad down the volume somewhat by making the semiconductors work into a load smaller than infinite. As you get lower (and I'm not exactly certain how low), it will start to...

    Boss DS-2 clipping diodes

Not quite as simple as a DS-1, now is it? ;) D11 and 12 are your most likely candidates, as they are in the "hard clip" configuration used in the DS-1, rat, D+, and many others. D8 and 9 are the next most likely, they look like they're in "soft clip" configuration a la the tubescreamer...

JCM 800 Bias? Tubes? & wattage question

...or they could kill you. Read up on safety before going under the chassis, but changing the tubes alone w/o a rebias can be done without going inside the chassis. If it needs a rebias, read up on safety and DIY or take it to a tech.

    Amp Distortion vs. Pedal

IIRC of late Trey uses vintage Fender Deluxes with some minor mods. You might look for a silverface Deluxe and stick some pedals in front of it, starting with the Boss SD-1. For distortion, amp vs pedal, IMO tube amp is the way to go. As a second best, tube amp on the verge of overdrive...

    EQ Guitar Tone

Bob's MY uncle too! ;) Seriously, get a smallish tube amp and crank it. Even something small and cheap like an Electar Tube 10 or an old Univox U45 will do the trick. IMO guitars, especially distorted guitars, need to go through tube amps to sound right. The closer to a cranked non-master...

FL + DKFH for drum sounds?

Anybody using Fruityloops and the drumkit from hell for drum sounds? How's it sound? What I want to do is burn good drum sounds to wavs for insertion into a multitrack program (like CEP or Cakewalk home 2K4).

    Fender Twin troubles

Two 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel = 4 ohms, so that's probably not your problem. Though if they are mistakenly wired in series at 16 ohms, you should notice a decrease in volume. My first guess would be the speakers themselves. Even wired at 4 ohms, the eminince alpha 12's put out about...

    Ibanez Tube Screamer

I can't speak for the other pedals Aaron mentioned, but I can tell you the Fulldrive2 is my favorite OD pedal. It sounds good with most amps, unlike other pedals I've tried, and sounds really good when you do the clean boost thing with it. IIRC, Banzai makes a clone of the FD2.

    Small, cheapish tube amp...

Fender Deluxe Reverb reissue or silverface DR Traynor Guitarmate or YCV20 Orange AD15 ...and my usual advice of old Ampeg, Sunn, etc, which you may or may not find around. Old MIJ amps copied some famous designs, e.g. Univox made copies of Fender's reverb preamps and also the Bassman/Plexi...

    FIRE! question about tube amps...

EL84's and 12ax7's are both 9 pin tubes, but the sockets should be labeled on the amp, and EL84 sockets usually have the wire retainers which are too tall to hold an ax7 in place...

What is wrong with my amp: part 2

That's a good way to get the voltages down to 10-20V or so. I also made a cap discharging tool with an insulated clipper lead from Radio Shack: cut it in half, solder in about 1K of resistance with 1W, electrical or liquid tape over it, and voila, clip on a cap in the middle of the supply, wait...
